Flew from Sydney to Auckland last night and observed this Cb from the Aircraft over the central Tasman Sea . The cloud top is higher than the horizon line from the aircraft and I think our height was about 35000 to 40,000 feet.

awesome!
(as I know how hard it is to get a good photo from a plane window! (reflections, etc)
the sat image did show show some big boil ups in the central/north tasman!
There has been considerable enhancement of the cloud out to the NW of the North island today which suggests to me there is a low centre forming up there. Gives us the propsect of some heavy rain overnight, perhaps thundery as it moves through.

looks to me now from the latest sat image that the low center has now a focal point at last..,...near north cape
so thats good, as that means we should get decent rain as it moves SE, here.,...as we need the rain...getting drier and drier!
Jeez I reckon Brian, we have had 11mm here today and it has been falling quite constantly. we have cracks in our paddocks you can fit your hand down.... in the last 3 months, we have had a total of 89mm of rain, which for a intensive dairy/beef unit like ours is starting to cause some issues... What has everyone else recorded for spring rainfall and how does it compare to other years for NW auckland?
