Ever read a 'Wheels' magazine or watched 'Top Gear' and wondered how they do those crazy drug induced coloured shots?
Well I could never afford a full set of Cokin filters for my film SLRs, but have found the next best thing for digital:
http://www.opanda.com/ Opanda Photo filter - a freeware package (2mb download) that has all the filter colours you can poke a stick at (except for the tobacco graduated filter I lusted after) Sample below....
Also Zero Assumption Recovery for recovering deleted files or formatted CF / SD / etc camera media. Also freeware - getting some rave user comments on some forums I follow http://www.z-a-recovery.com/
It's interesting finding all the free photo tools on the net.
I expect now to see a flood of cloud pictures posted up with the Cokin 003 red - it's an awesome visual tweak!
Cheers,
G

Is this a Photoshop plugin Graeme, or entirely standalone application? For instance, if the latter, what can it do that can't be done with, say, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc? Those pictures look pretty amazing.GraemeWi wrote:Ever read a 'Wheels' magazine or watched 'Top Gear' and wondered how they do those crazy drug induced coloured shots?

It's a stand alone Windows application -screen dump below - the likes of Photoshop is outside of my budget! If I can get good quality software for free than I'd rather put it in the bank then spend a couple of hundy on a box and cd. I have a free software list that I maintain http://www.graemewi.orcon.net.nz/free.htm - I'm a great advocate of open source and freeware

Excellent! I shall check it out immediately. Open Source is the future (if not already the Now).GraemeWi wrote:It's a stand alone Windows application...I have a free software list that I maintain...I'm a great advocate of open source and freeware
Have you used The GIMP? What do you think of it? I like it's handling of Alpha and Layers, even better than Photoshop. It's interface needs a great deal of work though, IMHO.

Yes - I've struggled with the Gimp - I've never really got used to the interface.
The filter program isn't open source as far as I know, but it's free so it's half-way there!
I try to contribute to open source projects where I can through testing and stuff like creating templates, user support etc.

Another free Windows application that may be of interest to the photographers on the forum:
http://www.picasa.com/picasa/ Photo album / photo collection software. Been bought out by Google and now the software is free. I like this app quite a bit!
I use a structured directory 'tree' for saving images on my PC - but Picasa is quicker to find a specific image I'm hunting for thanks to it's thumbnails and album grouping. Does a pretty good slideshow as well.

More digital image stuff:
Create VCDs of your photographs to play on your DVD player - quite good for doing a 'slideshow' type display of images. Uses menus etc.
http://www.nu2.nu/photovcd/
Free version available that does the trick. It takes quite a while to generate the VCD image file, yesterday my pc took 4-5 hours to build a VCD image of 980 pictures.

Have to mention - 17" TFT LCD monitor. I just got one and it makes images 'explode' into life compared to my old 17" CRT. Check http://www.Pricespy.co.nz for deals. I got one called a 'Direction' with 3 years warranty.

New technology pano stitcher - demo version on their website, it expires at the end of this month, but they will be putting up a new version then. Very good - it's way better than the supplied Canon software I have here.
Mentioned on a photography forum I read - some samples in the thread http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read. ... e=11239817
