much closer than nelson there... looking at the metstrike its probably just within 100kms to the nnw of chch...

Yes, Ricky, it's got it in the wrong place. I'll tweak the segmented ranging using today's data.

The sferics were quite strong and the way the Boltek was picking up strikes in rapid bursts made me suspicious. I've only noticed these bursts with the recent close storms.

Also, I'd expect your tracker to pick up some strikes for a storm over Nelson.

I know what you mean about those bursts! in fact starting to get them here now with a storm moving down into the gulf by the look of it!

Raining in Chch after a mostly sunny day. The lower South Island has had alot more rain, plus it was rather wintry down there according to TV1 Weather - apparently Gore dropped to 6C in the afternoon, and Timaru and Oamaru only got to 11C. Must be snowing on the high country.

Strange out there at the moment it's clearing out to the west but very grey in the east with rain here a few heavy bursts at times with sporadic drops of rain.
Although me,Aaron, and Steve didn't see or hear any thunder or lightning we still got to see some nice clouds check these out below.

ricky, you are getting lots of cloud to cloud strikes, yes?

i.e must be due to alot of wind shear.....i.e becuase of the 60 knot jet stream overhead...
as the rain radar is not showing much where the lighning is in the hauraki gulf
but there is very heavy rain in the outer hauraki gulf now,( well, North of great barrier island) moving south

yes there are a lot of c-c but i think they often range a lot closer than they really are... they are certainly high i would say as theyre showing up on the chch tracker too!

they might be way up in the jet stream even maybe!
there is a narrow rain band line over the aucland area, and the movement of those strikes was long that rain line .....which must be rain from maybe an upper level jet, associated with the forming depression

Great stuff guy's! At the moment I unfortunatley can't see storms on the horizon for a while.

Some nice heavy falls at times this morning but always stopping for long breaks. Wind isn't strong at all, gentle breeze. Some nice dark bases out there, pitty they won't do anything! Although if they do, horaay!

It's probably just a rainshaft as you say, but it looks suspiciously like a funnel cloud.

Just a rain shaft unfortunatley

But a narrowish one at that.

I've got a small video about 1 minute long (2.5MB, MPEG) showing the last Cb we saw and then showing it from a distance. I've compressed it to get the file size down a bit but it still looks ok. I'll put it up if anyone wants to see it?

Aaron, can you see the sea from your place? I'm just wondering what the sea is like with this strong onshore flow. (Brighton Pier webcam hasn't updated since last Wednesday)

Thanks - good webcam, but Brighton cam has a ground (or should I say beach) level view, better for seeing the size of the surf. I would've gone for a look myself, but I've been busy today with other things, like a polytech class.

Funny, when I was was cutting out the weather map for Sunday (from Monday's Press) to put in my weather diary, I opened the diary to mid August. The msl map for this last Sunday was very similar to the maps for the mid August southerly storm which brought snow to Canterbury and the severe southerly winds and rain in Wellington and Wairarapa.
