...and there was the rain... 5mm in about 5mins, then easing. With more on the way. Not much else
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Well how was that to end the day .
Southerly came through strong too then eased it was up around 43-44kmh.
I got sick of watching southerly so went inside to check radar and lightning detctor then it hit as loud as ever.
HAIL AND SOME REAL HEAVY RAIN!!! which came down in sheets I took somne pics of the hail not much fell but still good to see you can look at my pics from today on the forum tomora.
So I was eating the hail (lol) then ''FLASH'' a nice sheet lightning followed by a rumble of thunder which surprised me as I was not expecting lightning or thunder to happen anymore.
A few minutes later another good flash exept this one lit up a good section of the cloud then some nice thunder again enough to get the dog next door barking like mad. Then there was no more thunder just heavy rain for about half an hour with a stiff SW wind.
Not a bad day in all.
Cheers.

Only 5.7C here at the moment with steady rain, more like July then December.
The Timaru Herald has a story on hail dumped by the TS in the area yesterday.
"Hail swept through parts of South Canterbury last night, demolishing crops, shattering glasshouses, stripping trees, and putting a white Christmas on Pleasant Point's annual parade.
And while other parts of the region escaped the hail, heavy rain, wind and thunder and lightning made for an unseasonal evening, and saw firefighters in some areas called out to deal with flooding. "

Went to visit my brother and his family for a meal last night but thanks to a very understanding sister-in-law we ended up storm chasing down to the west of Rakaia before heading home again
There was a shower of 5-10mm hail at about 7:50pm south of West Melton then a lot of heavy rain once we found the storm near Rakaia. Saw some spectacular CGs, including one about 500m away but strikes (and sferics) were only every 2-3 minutes.
The rain made recording the storm difficult but I'll put up some video stills later.

Look foward to them Steven
The sun may rear it's ugly head soon. I've had no hail where I am but rain has been good through the night. This morning it's been raining but at times there's been no rain aswell, a mixed bag. But yeah, looking at the satellite pics shows some clearings behind this rain band. I suspect nothing from it but something to keep an eye on.

Frequent, squally, heavy showers present with few fine spells.
Southwesterly strengthening, 14c at present
People always refer to this as 'wintry' weather, but if we were in mid-early july and we got this same southerly blast with hectopascals, temps @ 11am would be below freezing in places like Waiouru, Alexandra, Queenstown etc. (Queenstown on 4c at 11am to note)
Auckland would be on about 9c, Hamilton 8c, Taupo 5c, Napier 7c, Wellington 7c, Christchurch 3c and snow, Dunedin 2c and snow, Invercargill 2c and snow...
So therefore, this is summer-like weather but we're very unlucky to have all these south to southwesterly situations

There was about 15 flashes recorded on the video footage from last night plus three good lightning sequences with another couple that were through trees or on the edge of the frame. Here are the best video stills that I could find.
Lessons learned
* could do with a wide angle lens on the camcorder to cover more of the sky. Or have four cameras round the car plus one for a sunroof
* need to switch off the recording indicator LED to stop it reflecting in the window
* automatic brightness has problems with the sudden change from pitch black to near daylight so the first couple of frames are just white.
* if possible, keep the camera recording at all times. Lightning will always occur within a few seconds of stopping
I've also made an animated GIF from the tracker data showing the development of the various storms yesterday. It runs from 3pm to 10:30pm with one frame every four minutes: http://www.templeton.gen.nz/images/041217storm.gif (121kB)
