Hi again everyone
Do any weather experts here have any historical data regarding the coldest temperatures ever recorded in Christchurch?
Preferably the coldest "10" temps but top 5 or even 3 would be great and the year they were recorded?
Thank you very much

Re: Lowest Temperatures Recorded In Christchurch???
Hi Rich, you can find most records at CliFlo.
Chch Aero's lowest-ever temp since records began in 1954 was -7.2C on June 30, 1975. The second lowest was -6.8C on July 18, 1980, followed by the third-equal lowest of -6.7C on Aug 10, 1980 and July 2, 1958.
Chch Gardens' lowest-ever temp since records began in 1905 was -7.1C on July 19, 1945, with the second lowest of -6.4C recorded the day before, although this is extreme for the Gardens. Its third-equal lowest of -5.4C was shared between June 29, 1975, June 26, 1959 and June 5, 1905.
Note that earlier, less complete records taken near the then 'Provincial Council Chambers' in the late 1800's show readings of -6.1C on May 23, 1884, -5.9C on May 30, 1878 and -5.8C on June 16, 1872.
Edit: Revised Chch Gardens figures.

Interesting how none of those are in the last 30 years.

Don't have those details, but sounds about right.NZstorm wrote:I see Wigrams' historic low is -9.4C and Lincoln -11.6C!
It would appear that during these more severe events, Chch Aero can be about 2-4C or more cooler than Chch Gardens. So -7C at the Gardens could feasably equate to as low as -11C at the airport. Worth noting though that, during relatively less severe events, the airport can also somtimes be a few degrees warmer than the Gardens.
Yes, although it could also be said that, of the 14 days that Chch Aero recorded -6.0C or less over the last 58 years, 8 occurred during the last 20 years. Or contrastingly, of the 14 days that Chch Gardens recorded -5.0C or less over the last 107 years (not counting this year), only 2 have occurred during the last 30 years. Aren't stats wonderful!Razor wrote:Interesting how none of those are in the last 30 years.
