Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
Bust in eastern Montana yesterday thanks to a very strong cap. 700mb temps pushing 15C on the SE MT/WY border were too warm for convective initiation. Came late though with height falls after dark.
Chasing northeast North Dakota and possibly Manitoba where helicity and CAPE is maximised.

There was a 2 billion dollar hail storm in Dallas on Wednesday. That's an estimate of the insurance claims that could be made.
It looks like it could be one of the costliest thunderstorms in US history.

Awesome. I've never experienced massive hail. Had ping pong ball sized but that's it. Driven back to see large hail but that's different to actually watching the fall.

Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
More like an NZ style hailstorm that although very intense. This is a ripper of a storm also.
There was a thunderstorm heat burst in Nebraska last night at Broken Bow. The temperature rose from 23C to 34C at 4am. Descending air compresses and warms, an extreme example of what happens in a Canterbury NWer.

Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
A lot of severe thunderstorm warnings out for the US today with the gfs showing lifted index values upto -16C!
The derecho that occured over the weekend that knocked out the power in the eastern US has been labeled a superstorm. It was moving at over 100km/h and traveled from the midwest to the eastern coast in one night. The media report it came without warning but the SPC had a mod risk up on the day!

Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
Could someone define a little what the storm was. Was it a fast moving front? or Gust? or what?
What was the term Drecho they used?

Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
The derecho starts off as some convection in the midwest which is triggered by a boundary and the storm propagates eastward and expands as it does so forming an MCS. With Saturdays case the derecho hitched a ride eastward on the jet stream and due to record breaking heat over the eastern US, it was moving into CAPE values as high as 5000j/kg.

Great clip. Interesting how it dissolved as soon as it reached the cooler sea. You can also see the affect of the Appalachians on it.

Re: US Storm Chasing 2012
Interesting alright
but it appeared to have dissolved because of the radars distance limitations would it like??
