Re: Frosts 2012
LOL, It was quite frosty in the Waikato yesterday. You neighbours in the Western Island don't know what cold is. I smile at my friends in Darwin complaining about how cold this dry is.

Re: Frosts 2012
Been cold (it's all comparative of course) but also very wet despite the likelihood of an El NIno. July rainfall all time record is set to be busted. As for Darwin we regard it as a small flat land government funded town (similar to Townsville) with laughable pretensions of grandeur.

Re: Frosts 2012
I've been at Port Douglas since Tuesday afternoon. Lovely balmy day-night warmth first couple of days and lots of sun, cooler nights since then. Cloudy this am at present. No rain at all yet.boomer wrote:Been cold (it's all comparative of course) but also very wet despite the likelihood of an El NIno. July rainfall all time record is set to be busted. Darwin gets over 90% of the possible sun in June-July, so you aren't putting me off. And there are some interesting places inland of there - just takes longer and more $$ to get to that part of Aus. from NZ. Have talked to a few Australians from the south who have holidayed in Darwin, and they liked it.
I never pre-judge places using only the parochial comments of others, as I've seen far too much of that nonsense in NZ over the decades.

Re: Cairns Weather
The 38.6mm recorded at Cairns Airport on the 10th was a July Daily Rainfall record for that site, since records began in 1941 (previously 31.0mm in 1944). However, that still falls short of the 44.5mm recorded at Cairns Post Office in 1930, from records spanning 1882 to 1957.
P.S. Also worth noting that further down the coast, Innisfail recorded 145.4mm in the 24 hrs to 9am on the 10th - its highest ever July Daily Rainfall since records began in 1881 (previously 92.5mm in 1959).
And the 87.6mm recorded at Townsville Airport that day also beat its previous record of 51.1mm set in 1950, since records began in 1940 (although Townsville Hospital apparently recorded 89.7mm one July day sometime between 1913 and 1941 (not sure which day though?)

Re: Cairns Weather
I remember one Cairns night when our touch night was cancelled because of the freezing 15 degree conditions that evening.boomer wrote:What's frost?

Was in P Douglas/Cairns for 8 days, Brisbane for 2 - not a drop of rain. Cairns monthly total may end up only a little above average despite the 38mm day.

Re: Cairns Weather
Deano,
The show was dry... but you are right it is quite unusual for that to happen (it's a weird anomaly).
Okay, okay re the July record... it was early in the month (and we are looking at some spectacular sunny days over the weekend).
In response to Rwood in regard to pre judging both Townsville and Darwin... both nice places in their own way and I highly recommend a visit... but there is a reason Cairns is a more popular tourism destination. Think Queenstown as the winter capital of adventure in Oceania... think Cairns for the warmed up version.

Yes, I can see that Cairns has gone ahead a lot in the last decade or so. Will have to visit Darwin as part of a far north type of trip.

I used to laugh at this too - but the last two dry seasons have felt pretty brisk for me on a number of mornings which has been leading to the onset of shivering.RWood wrote:"Cold" is a laughable notion for Darwin, or even the Cairns area.

I would imagine places like Broome, Kununurra and possibly Katherine gets over 95% of the possible sun in June-July. Darwin has the odd humid day with a lot of influence from the northern seas. The last two seasons have been very good for sunshine thanks to the much cooler SSTs! Yes, we get a lot of tourists from down south telling us it's like a different country in the Top End!!RWood wrote:Darwin gets over 90% of the possible sun in June-July, so you aren't putting me off. Re: Cairns Weather
Willo, you've acclimatised! You need to come home during winter
I loved my time visiting Cairns, but I've been fortunate to have experienced good weather whilst there.
I honestly thought I'd melt in the North, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Cairns wasn't as bad as Darwin, but I have trouble imagining the winter being cold (well not as cold as the -3°C I was working in in Galatea the other day.

Re: Cairns Weather
Broome goes a couple of % better in June-July, but there's very little in it. It's all inconceivably sunny compared to NZ where no place has ever exceeded about 84% of the possible in any month. Add to that - locally we've been in a relative sunshine deficiency for 2.5 years, so the contrast seems even greater.Willoughby wrote:I used to laugh at this too - but the last two dry seasons have felt pretty brisk for me on a number of mornings which has been leading to the onset of shivering.RWood wrote:"Cold" is a laughable notion for Darwin, or even the Cairns area.

Got to 9C. That's just outrageous. Set to warm up though with some cloud cover. Having said that the days have been sublime but a little chilly at around 24C.
