Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
Over the last hour the hills - Mt Peel through to Mt Hutt - became obscured by a grey curtain, and a shower of soft graupel has fallen here;
some interesting tall billowing white clouds and streaky low grey ones to my east; patches of blue sky around.
temp.now 4.4 degrees.

Interesting we still have the sunshine here in Rolleston, I was expecting the sleety showers by now. Will we miss out on any of the action from this polar blast?

Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
All the action out east apart from the fading inland shower. It might get a bit more exciting later as the cloud over the central S.I moves north.
Very cold wind here, not a drop of rain.

Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
We just had the craziest little hail shower - it just stormed down for about 30 seconds, and then stopped suddenly and the sun came out. The hail literally covered the deck completely in that time. I would have hated to have been out in it - they were decent "pea sized" hailstones.

Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
I can see that on the radar very small but intense colours, no thunder with it lincolnian?
This system is just starting to get organised was always going to be a later on evening/overnight event for Canterbury from what ive been reading in the models anyway, much colder air from after dark.
Watch the radar to the south in the next few hours you will see what i mean.
A few graupel stones at work before 3pm and a hint of sleet driving home, still very small shower cells which will get bigger soon.

Time will tell with all of these events but like all other times its patiance.
We have all been there before hoping, waiting, wishing.. what we all have to relise is that we are not even half way through this cold snap, even though its only a very quick one.
Coldest air doesnt arrive untill later on, so all you snow lover out there, including me can keep waiting for the biggest part of this blast to come yet

Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
A solitary clap of thunder three minutes ago, first I've heard for months. Hail as white as snow across the landscape.

Southerly has come through and the wind is picking up. We had hail and sun at the same time for a minute.

Re: Polar outbreak Tuesday/Wednesday for NZ
What does everyone make of the metservice saying on the outlook for this friday night and saturday that there is low risk of heavy snow below 500m in central canterbury?? Do the maps suggest this could happen or is it a metservice supercomputer mistake???
