General December Weather
It looks like December will get off to a nice start for most.
Mid-late during the week some wet weather comes. GFS is hinting at some nice cold air aloft moving over the country and a large low sitting over us.

Hope that the SFC temps will be high enough to create good instability......jamie wrote: GFS is hinting at some nice cold air aloft moving over the country and a large low sitting over us.

Re: General November Weather
Warm humid air arrives from the north Taman tomorrow and hangs around for a few days. Should feel a bit more like summer atleast!

Re: General December Weather
Interesting to note that on MetService's Thunderstorm Outlook for today it mentions the slightest possibility of lightning disharges in the wave cloud associated with the NW. I can remember going to a MetSoc meeting years ago when this fellow from Colgate mentioned that he had observed lightning in NW Arch cloud overhead on the odd occasion. I just thought that I would mention this. Thankyou.

Re: General December Weather
I would have thought the risk would need to be more widespread and higher on the west coast for this to happen, the MS only cover a coastal low risk for the west coast.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Interesting to note that on MetService's Thunderstorm Outlook for today it mentions the slightest possibility of lightning disharges in the wave cloud associated with the NW. Abit of a risk tomorrow too south of christchurch although it will be alot later on maybe even evening for some parts as a pool of air drifts over the lower south, warm dry air further north for most of the day though but possibly some light coastal winds south of christchurch as the NW flow dies off.

Re: General December Weather
I'm so frustrated with looking at Metservice forecasts for Christchurch city. Every time it says 23, 24, 27 degrees and so on, it's more like 15 degrees due to the Nor Easter. Can't they just assume that Chch is going to have the cold Nor Easter always blowing (as it always seems to). Sure there may be NW up high or inland but the number of times it makes it to Christchurch seem to be so few and far between. I was looking forward to a nice warm day and instead it's another indoor day because it's too windy and cold outside. I can't blame Metservice for the weather but why are they consistently forecasting higher temperatures than we ever reach?

Yeah, we were in town around lunch-time and it was a bit cool with an easterly blowing. Had to grab the jersey from the car.

Re: General December Weather
Happens at least once every two of three years about this area John, the best example of it was when i was living out the back of Amberley in summer of 1991,one night about 3.00am and i was woken by thunder so of cause i had to go outside and watch it,it was a night of arch cloud but also a full moon or near to it so this added to spectacle, the lightning was all the horizontal type which zipped across from west to east beneath the high cloud, after about an of this i hoped on the farm 4x4 and drove up to the highest point on the property(300m)from there you could see the lightning from about Timaru all the way up to Kaikoura,it was amazing to watch. It was at the same time when Granity on the West Coast got flooded, the lightning on this side even made the papers i remember.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Interesting to note that on MetService's Thunderstorm Outlook for today it mentions the slightest possibility of lightning disharges in the wave cloud associated with the NW. Re: General December Weather
Some good thunder possibilities still showing up for NZ from mid next week .
I think it still looks too warm in the upper levels for thunder along the Canterbury coast tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Re: General December Weather
Wow. That's fantastic
Thanks for that.
NW here from about 5pm, with a pathetic looking Arch forms seen from here.
Temperature just scrapped 20C with the wind change from the NE, with nothing hot about the possibilities about the possible temperatures for the day being in the mid twenties as forecasted.
Keep your fingers crossed. May get to 22C tomorrow.

Re: General December Weather
If the NW had reached CHCH it certainly would have been 28+ because it reached 24.5 here and the NW is normally cooler here than CHCH,been a strong wind at times too,but thankfully a warm oneWeetbicks wrote:I'm so frustrated with looking at Metservice forecasts for Christchurch city. Yes, still a strong longwave pattern on the gfs with polar air for later in the week.
As for tomorrows' eastern South Island chances, I agree, the shortwave doesn't reach the South Island until late evening, too late in the day for thunder. Could still be a shower or two on sea breeze convergence though.

Re: General December Weather
Whenuapai sounding last night showing the upper level subtropical airmass over us with cool surface air.
Areas away from the west coast should warm up a bit today.
