SE Australia Extreme Heat

Unread post by Willoughby »

A very impressive heat wave over much of the continent over the next few days.

Hobart AP is currently sitting on the big 40°C!!! Really hope any bushfires that do break out are contained.

Wudinna, SA taking the max temp so far today, reaching 47.7°C at 1347. Port Augusta slightly behind, recorded 47.6°C.

Ouch.

All time new record too by the looks for Hobart.

Wudinna Airport, north-central Eyre Peninsula SA went higher this arvo, 48.2°C at 1513!

Interestingly, Hobart's 41.8°C was the highest for the state (unofficial).

Apparantly a fire front went blasting through pushing the temperature up briefly, although no records I guessing because of that

Still 35.9c here in Melbourne at 10.40pm, I like the heat but it makes it a nightmare to sleep. The cool change won't bring a big cool down, slowly moving its way east.

The 41.8*C recorded at Hobart is not quite a Tasmania state record, but is certainly a site record. The State record was set on 30th January 2009, with max temps of:

42.2*C at Scamander
41.8*C at St Helens
41.6*C at Ross

These high temperatures are a local fohn effect as NW or W winds (often strong) descend the interior mountains and onto eastern coastal areas. A 30kt wind and 40*C+ must be an experience!

Even the inland and high altitude stations recorded high temperatures on the 4th Jan, with 36.3*C at Tunnack Fire Station (462m amsl), 32.3*C at Butlers Gorge (667m) and 30.6*C at Liawenee (1057m).

Richard, the fire-front's leading edge would be the hottest part of the fire, hence the relatively sudden increase from about 38.5C to 54.9C. Dunalley's official high of about 41C was recorded about 2 hours earlier. I wouldn't be surprised if the WS's screen got a little scorched though.

As Simon suggests, a good foehn was in effect over Tassie.

I do wonder if that correct in regard to Kings and Flinders islands, surely it wouldn't been that hot when you compare how much cooler the northerly wind was on the north side of Tassie

Looking bad over NSW tomorrow, fire danger at the "Catastrophic" level. Apparently parts of the state will see their worst fire danger they have ever experienced.

Not good. All of NSW's 803 National Parks have been shut.

From BoM Senior Climatologist Dr. David Jones:
For the first time on record Australia has seen 5 days in a row on which the nation wide average maximum temperature has exceeded 39C. Today's data will make 6 and tomorrow's data 7.
Oodnadatta, SA set a new record for 6 consecutive days of 45C or more.

90% of WA forecast to hit 40C tomorrow, most of inland SA, almost all of NSW other than the elevated and NE fifth, all of SW QLD, the southern half of the NT, and loads of other areas above the old ton mark.

The heat is on!!

Sydney is tipped to reach 43C today, which would make it its 3rd highest ever temp recorded since records began in 1858, the highest being 45.3C in 1939 and 2nd highest 44.2C in 2006 (recorded at Observation Hill).

will be interesting to watch and see which records are broken today.

Richard, with regards to the high temperatures on Kings and Flinders Islands, it may be due to the fact that the very warm air was being advected from the nearby Aussie mainland which combined with topographical features on the islands resulted in their high temperatures. The north coast may well have been cloudy due to moisture picked up as the air travelled further across the Tasman Strait. It would be nice if anyone with more knowledge of the area could help with this!

The foehn (or fohn!) effect definitely enhanced temepratures to the lee of the central mountains...it also provided some rather dry air which is not good for the fire situation.

I don't think many people choose to live in remote far-out communities, but they're born there with family. Aboriginal people don't tend to move to the big cities, leaving behind clan land, heritage, and language.

Leonora (210 km N of Kalgoorlie, WA) reached 49.0°C today.

For comparison, a typical non-heatwave August month in Ahvaz, Iran!

http://www.wunderground.com/history/air ... atename=NA

!

Would be a competitor for hottest summers anywhere in the world based on maximum temperatures - I think a typical July/August month in Ahvaz would be hotter than the hottest month ever recorded anywhere in Australia.

even so - surely its not a case of annoyance, but of real danger of death in such extreme temps? what is the maximum a human can survive a few hours in?

edit: after some research, it seems the danger point is about 50-55C, so its getting damn close.

Looks like today will be more suited to the above scenario with it being hot in the basins and cooler on the coast.

Temp forecasts, Saturday:
Penrith: 45C, Richmond: 44C, Homebush: 36C, City: 39C
