I see that mid NI had a bit of a shake up early today.
Forgotten where it was but it was deep and about 5.8M on the Richter Scale.

Felt very widely too right down to Christchurch and Greymouth, i didnt feel it or wake up myself but i know of people who did.
Generally those deep quakes at that sort of magnitude are not felt at the epicentre but felt more widely because the energy travels down existing fault lines throughout the country.

Yea not felt here but reports were lodged from around here. Im thing they were on hills. Eg harder ground rather than old swampy soft peat ground like most around here

I felt a quake around 4 AM a few days ago, reports from Geonet said it was around Gisborne. Oddly enough I never felt the one's today. I have felt quakes from Rotorua but the stuff down south doesnt seem to get noticed.
When I visited Palmerston North for about a week I felt them all the time.

Geonet Report a shallow M5.0 just off the coast of Mt Taranaki at 03:11am this morn followed by another M4.3 about 31 minutes later. Felt widely around the N.I. and upper S.I.

Have seen a few "false quakes" off the west coast of Auckland since the launch of Geonet Rapid, other ones in the past similar to this one have ended up being classified as "Not existing". In my opinion this quake report is also an event that never occurred.

Since yesterday, there has been activity under Wellsford and east of Whangarei also, as well as a few near Whitianga.

Apparently this little 5.1 sucker is not an earthquake...according to new reports its a nuclear bomb

That's huge for Iran!

Not really. Iran has history of large and very deadly quakes. A few examples include a 7.8 in 1978 killing 15,000, a 7.4 in 1990 killed 50,000 and more recently, a 6.6 in 2003 killed 31,000.

Yeah and in a country that can not afford to build to earthquake standards either, so alot of damage can be caused by even a 5.0-5.5 magnitude.
I see PNG has had a 6.8 magnitude not long ago, probly reacting to the Iran shake as all the plates reshuffle.

I am also watching central america too at Oklahoma they seem to be in abit of swarm there at the moment, they had 4 quakes in 3 hours yesterday between 3.3 and 4.3 and i see they have had another two since i last looked.
That is on the rift plate i cant remember the actual name, but millions of years ago it opened up a huge gash on the plains and from time to time it gives out swarms of quakes sometimes up in the 5.5-7.0 range.
I watched a doccumentry on it awhile ago on Nat Geo, i must see if i can find it as it was also about the great north american mega thrust quakes and the next overdue one in the area.

PNG is thousands of kilometres away... doubt there is any link at all
