I was impressed when I saw the images last week - it probably helps they have a great view to point it at
They use a StarDot Netcam: http://www.stardot-tech.com/netcam/index.html. I see the Hanmer website are the NZ resellers !

Its one of the best Webcams I have seen (for looking at weather) in Nz anyway!
Also I have recorded just over 22mm here today and jeffs has only recorded 7.8 I think john mentioned 3mm and Steven Graham 6.4mm.
I have noticed this before but is there some reason the North side of CHCH gets more rain!! This also was the case back in think december when we had the hail storm (22.12.04) over here and almost next to nothing at jeffs (8.8mm)

There was 1 heavy shower here before I went to work about 7:15am. I had just arrived about 7:45am when the clouds opened with a heavy shower at work (cnr Roydvale Ave and Wairakei Rd's) so I expect the airport gauge would have collected something from that one.03 Stormchaser wrote:Also I have recorded just over 22mm here today and jeffs has only recorded 7.8 I think john mentioned 3mm and Steven Graham 6.4mm.

At about 12:50pm, there was a downpour for about 15 mins that caused some flooding in the buildings at work. I looked at my webcam at 1:pm at the road was dry and nothing recorded by the rain gauge for that hour.
This evening I've been along Cashmere Rd to an address under the Port Hills. Very sheltered from the southerly wind and rain we currently have. Heading away from the hills toward home, the rain intensity more then doubled.
Quite a cool evening, temp now 12.5C at 7:10pm, rain with a southerly wind gusting to 26km/h.

Yes very much a downpour early this morning although I slept through the whole thing it deliverd 16.4mm iam guessing between 5:30am-6:30am because I woke up just after 6:30am and it was just clearing and stopping.
But wow some really dark CU as I was heading into town this morning and the most biggest raindrops I have ever seen on the east coast of course taking in that I have seen bigger rainfalls on the west coast of SI.
Also spotted a funnel cloud very visable and large too just SE of the Northern motorway but as usual I didn't have my camera with me and the traffic was backed up for ages on the southern end of the motorway.
But otherwise it would have been an awsum photo the funnel was visable because it was coming down in front of some blue sky I inatially thought it was going to touch ground but then within 3 minutes it dissapeared into the clouds.
Strange enough there wa hardly a breath of wind from any direction but there was obviously some activity up high.
I didn't hear any thunder or get any hail today as I say I think it was a localised convection but otherwise things have cooled down rapidly.
Iam so bummed I didn't get a picture
of the funnel I tell you what it beats all the ones Iv'e seen across NZ.
Cheers

Great stuff Jason, another funnel for Cantebury! I was on the road around 8:50pm so unfortunatley too late to see anything in any direction (except nice Cu and dark bases), perhaps a passing motorist was good enough to take a photo and it'll apear in the paper tomorrow. We live in hope!
Awsome to hear it was nearly a tornado, hopefully we'll get a nice country tornado soon!
Yes, if you can you must take your camera where ever you go! I always take mine with me now, no excuses! Well, at times of year that activity could be possible at least anyway, lol.

Thanks for that info about the funnel Jason.
We came through Clarkesville yesterday on the way back from Oxford in Jimmy and I looked up into the the sky and thought that this area is becoming like a 'Canterbury Tornado Alley" although nothing was visible yesterday.
I ALWAYS have a camera of some sort handyespecially today as it looked quite thundery.
For the records I only had a 1 down for today.
