European Heatwave Late July 2013
The heat we have been experiencing in the UK has spread further east with some very high temperatures expected in central Europe today before it all goes bang. Forecasts on Thursday (25th July) suggested a pool of 582Dm air over Austria by Sunday. Don't see that very often. The highest temperatures I could find for Saturday 27th July were (from UKww):
Germany, 38.1*C at Rheinstetton
France, 39.1*C at Carpentras (this is in southern France)
France, 38.2*C at Colmar (this is in northern France)
Switzerland, 37.1*C at Basel - Binningen
Austria, 36.8*C at Kufstein
Czech Republic, 37.2*C at Doksang
The synoptic chart for 0600GMT for Sunday 28th July shows a broad southerly flow over most of central and eastern Europe ahead of a north-south cold front stretching from N Germany to the France/Spain border and this is meandering eastwards into all that hot air.
I would not be surprised to see the odd 40*C temperature for today.

Slightly hotter on Sunday, with 39*C again reached. Monday should see 40*C breached in a number of places as the top temperatures will come from the Balkan countries. Highest temperatures for Sunday taken from UKww were:
39.2*C at Waidhofen, Austria
38.7*C at Doksany, Czech Republic
38.2*C at Gyor, Hungary
Storms have continued further west (there were some humdingers in France + Germany on Saturday), with the following video also copied from UKww. Watch the broken slates begin to fall off the roof as the hail gets bigger. This tape is from Lower Saxony, Germany:

Thats an incorrect figure, its 31000 strikes per 2 hours not per min......RODALCO wrote:

Thanks for clearing that up.
That lightning strike data is a bit vague as it climbs up and drops down dueing the 30 sec. or 1 minuterefresh rate of the page.

Looks like a possible F3.
A jet stream has been lingering over western Europe last few days but looks like it clears away now.
