The same thing happened in Rotorua in 2000 and caused a home to become abandoned. This was very close to Kuirau Park though. http://www.volcano.si.edu/volcano.cfm?v ... orua&tab=1

I think this one in Rome is more of a surprise as it quiet a distance from the closest thermal / volcanic activity.
The nearest possibly active volcanic system is the Monti Albani, which lies 20km south-east of Rome, although its last known activity took place around 20,000 years ago

Man that thing is going for it.

Any word from officials about what's going on for one to appear like this a long way from any other activity.

Odd, I didn't seem to notice steam escaping from it like I do at Kuirau Park in Rotovegas.

The thing that has surprised me about this is that, apart from a report in the Telegraph a week ago, the news sites that appear on a Google search for the event are not exactly 'mainstream'... I'm sure if one of these steaming and bubbling efforts was to pop up on Memorial Avenue or Puhinui Road, the Press or the Herald would have something to say

From what I've read in the local papers, the authorities don't seem to be too concerned. Rather than a hydrothermal type vent, it seems more likely to be the rupture of a pocket of pressurised, relatively shallow trapped gas, which are quite common in the area and comprises mostly of carbon dioxide with a little methane and hydrogen sulphide in the mix.

The site is also only about 5m asl and just over 1 km from the coast, with a tributary of the Tiber River nearby. I'd like to know what the temperature of the gas is, as it's hard to tell whether that's steam or just vapour as the CO2 percolates through the water-table in much the same way as vapour forms when you take the cap off a fizzy drink. That's not to say it isn't warm, as you don't normally have to go very deep before a noticeable increase in temperature occurs.

Apparently, pipes had also been relaid directly under the roundabout some days before, which required drilling at a depth significant enough that, in all probability, contributed to this manifestation. It's not the first time that boreholes to test the ground's substructure for construction purposes have hit these gas pockets, and they're not that easy to plug-up.

Although there are more recent examples, this link from Feb 2005 makes fairly interesting reading. Also, this local blogger has some interesting theories.

Wow, interesting theories. It will be interesting to see what the eventual outcome is. Thanks for the links Nev.
