The SW change has reached Wellington. No wind at the moment and the temperature hasn't dropped much. Lots of rain though.

Very stormy-looking cloud towering to my south or SSW.

heavy rain on and off since 5ish this morning, not that cold here, certainly no signs of sleet/snow/hail.
rain doesnt feel that cold either .
through cloud breaks there's no sign of white peaks around the 600-900m hills.

Cold day with usual precipitation from a cold southerly change.
"Warm" for any sleety showers although there was very small hail here around 6pm, with an isolated downpour.

Wasn't too bad here when I got up for work around 0430.. but 1 hour later that all changed with a huge southerly blow & a barrage of hail & torrential rain.. then it was hail coldies in a train until lunchtime. Still extremely bitter out there right now with the gusty winds but the stars are twinkling.. for the moment!

Yeah well out with the snow level, more like 600m around here rather than the 300m they were forecasting. They where saying snow to 100m north of Waipara in the rural forecast but looking at the Hanmer webcam it looks more like 600-700m.Bradley wrote:Interesting that the Metservice got the snowline wrong by 400m for my area, another repeat of the June event!!
Still overcast this morning with a fresh southerly, 5 degrees.

The rain radar has shown red spots passing over here this morning yet the rain hasn't been that heavy at all

The Auckland radar on its lowest scan (0.5deg) is looking at precip at about the 1000m level over Auckland City. The stronger echoes would be sleet or snow loft on a cold day like this. The solid precip would send back a stronger return.David wrote:The rain radar has shown red spots passing over here this morning yet the rain hasn't been that heavy at all
I drove through quite heavy rain Mt Roskill last hr.

The snow line looks around the 400m here looking on here- http://koordinates.com/layer/88-nz-spot-heights/snowstormwatcher wrote:Yeah well out with the snow level, more like 600m around here rather than the 300m they were forecasting. It was a bit funny that Metservice were saying snow down to 200m when Windguru and the other models were always stating the snowline was going to be around 500-600m, it's like the Metservice just pick a figure out of nowhere based on, well nothing! Not good enough, about the 4th time this season they have been horribly wrong.

Re: Cold outbreak Snow to low levels Wed - Thur 4 - 5 sep
I've read reports that it was snowing in Methven (324m asl) last night and also that there was a brief light dusting of snow in Darfield (212m asl).
I think that when MS talk about snow lowering to certain levels, they mean the level to which snow may fall, but not necessarily settle.

Wild night here in Welly.. 5.1 quake at 8 minutes past midnight.. Just 40.7 kms away..
That woke me for sure..
Then just across the valley is Mt Kaukau.. Highest gust 150kph around 2am..
Wet and windy all day, but seems calmer now.. I feel this event is all but over here..

That means it could've snowed on the Port Hills last night, even though none was visible this morning. (been occasions before with sleet in city but no white dusting up there)I think that when MS talk about snow lowering to certain levels, they mean the level to which snow may fall, but not necessarily settle.
