yes, looking like an active week over eastern Australia with supercells/large hail likely. The season there is really coming to life!

Bugger, my colleague is in China and I can't go anywhere for the moment. Would quite like to experience some of their storms, picking the right time to go is the problem.

It's sparking up quite well in Darwin at the mo too. Unusual to see good storms in both SE Queensland and Darwin at the same time in my opinion FWIW.

Observed sounding here from Brisbane last night showing a classic loaded gun set up.
You will never see a sounding like this from NZ, more like a Texas sounding!

Re: Australian Thunderstorm Season 2013/14
Looks like another big day for convection there today and then the set up starts to fall apart.
There is another set up in the pipeline for later in the week but the jet stream dynamics don't look great.

Thought this story about the tornado north of Sydney on Monday might be of interest…
'Hornsby tornado: nothing mini about it' - Sydney Morning Herald
Also, the first news-video in this story has some great footage...
'More rain headed for Sydney after tornado" - 7-News
Note: Fast forward the second video 3:00 minutes for earlier coverage (labelled a 'mini-cyclone' then).

Re: Australian Thunderstorm Season 2013/14
Thanks for the links Nev.
The tornado occurred with a moist SE flow so not a typical Sydney thunderstorm set up, where convection comes in from the west.

Re: Australian Thunderstorm Season 2013/14
I see Adelaide hit 43.4C today, making it the 3rd hottest December day on record after 44.2C in 1904 and 43.9C in 1931. Melbourne also right up there with 39.9C today.
