Hi John, here's the link, which includes 3 or 4 separate interviews, 2 live and 1 for the 6 o'clock news…

'"Bloody Twister" - New Zealand brothers catch Scott County tornado on video' - KFVS12

According to the interviewer, 'tornadoes basically don't exist in NZ'… lol

Just thinking, the presenter used the word " basically"' ,meaning to me that tornados do exist in NZ but are not noted on a grand scale as what they are in the USA. ? :-k

Yes, I'd be inclined to agree with that line of thought. We get far less of them here, and they are much smaller & shorter lived.

Some areas never get any thunderstorm induced tornadoes like here ,we do get mid summer whirlwinds though which can send things flying

Certainly a great part of the world to live in for weather. Excellent footage there.

We seem to get quite a few tornado events around Auckland if you consider the very small land size.

Something worth highlighting is the fact that EF4 tornadoes occurred in the US last week with relatively small CAPE numbers (under 1000j/kg). It blows away the myth that you need high CAPE for violent tornadoes. But the shear is huge in the US. We don't get shear like that in NZ.

I thought that would be a good story for one of the local networks.

There has been a steady decline in the number of tornado days in the USA since about 1970.

Chart shows the number of days in which at least one F1 or higher tornado is recorded in the US for each year. Harold Brookes(NOAA).

Just unfortunate that this year a few big ones cut through urban areas.

The other part to those stats is that while there are fewer days, there are big days with more twisters.

is this a global warming side effect?
(due to maybe a shift in the jet stream north or not such cold air from the north, or a combination or ?)

The say under climate change the jet streams will become even more curved (snake like) rather than straight. The curved jet streams slow up the progression of weather systems and likely to lead to more blocking patterns. Perhaps there are more springtime omega blocks over the US now than in the past. The omega block puts a ridge over Tornado Alley.

that sounds like a good reason
certainly have seen more blocking patterns around the world lately

Severe thunderstorm threat over southern US next couple of days with strong tornadoes predicted by SPC.

Low instability/high shear set up.

Forecast sounding for Mississippi. Lapse rates look fairly weak in this set up with a tropical looking airmass.

Nice clip.

Reed Timmer completely missed this tornado in his backyard, he was too far south on the day.

The chasers on Rendez Vous Torndao Alley caught it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0fygr-1hKg
