Re: Unsettled weather & possible thunderstorms, 28-30 Dec
Just went out to try and see lightning from a cell heading SE from Wanganui. It ended up being really murky and was hard to work out where the cell was coming from. I ended up heading towards the darkest set of cloud. The thunderstorm raced past me to the north, with only one IC lightning flash seen.
I must of travelled a few hundred kms, locally, in the last couple of days and have only seen about half a dozen lightning flashes and nothing else of note.

Its almost like before with the rain band/ embedded thunderstorms converged zone, except this time its converged storms in a line down the coast from Oamaru to near Dunedin.
The one near Mt Peel is trying to get going threw a strike before I think going by the tracker.
Looks like a small trough swipes the east coast tonight

Nice shot there Chris.
No thunder here but distinctive backdrops of thunderstorms out to the east or SE of here with rather large darkening cloud layers..
NW here now, although light.
Some kelvin in the weakening NW Arch layer.

I could see inflow structure on that storm out to SW of Timaru last night. There was good shear yesterday but high cloud cut the heating.
Photo here of it developing out to SW of Timaru.

Another shot from my phone from Sunday in Otago. This storm looked to be down over Invercargill way.
