Re: General February Weather
Looks like Palmerston North was the hot spot today with 32C.
A humid warm day here, only a few drops of rain made it to my suburb. Ak max was around 25C, dewpoint around 19C.

Feels oppressive and airless this afternoon; a few spits of rain; cloudy all day.

Re: General February Weather
Reminds me of visiting Darwin in some ways. Would appreciate a cool night, hard to sleep here without air conditioning. It's the longest hot/humid spell in a while and I think it's going to stick around a bit more yet.

Re: General February Weather
I see the gang on the Canterbury weather updates page are going for temps into the 30s tomorrow and high 30s even 40C on Friday.
Seems a little over the top I would think.

35C not out of the question for an official temperature on Friday, particularly Blenheim.melja wrote:I see the gang on the Canterbury weather updates page are going for temps into the 30s tomorrow and high 30s even 40C on Friday.

There talking Canterbury only, I have a feeling that the NWer will be around inland so that's going to moderate the temps from those levels there.

Re: General February Weather
I think its not out of the question, upper level temps look to be about -5C to -6C on Friday with a present jet stream dragging the air across the Tasman.
To give you an idea upper air was -8C on Tuesday with temperatures around 33-34C, so give or take between 35-38C in some areas provided there is no cloud cover and a present more northerly quarter wind.
I seen the very warm set up for Tuesday from the weekend just gone and even when the MS were only going for 28C I knew it would get past that and they would be nowcasting.
Tomorrow could be early 30's but the cap will be an afternoon sea breeze for the east coast.

Re: General February Weather
Mist coming in here now, which at this time of year can precede a very warm day.

Re: General February Weather
Its interesting that 40 years on from the hottest day recorded in NZ, we have never had a repeat of that warm airmass over NZ.
Typically the hot air masses from Australia moderate but not on that particular day.
Jason, you need to look at 850mb temperatures rather than 500mb for gauging likely max temps.

This current humid spell across NZ comes to an end at the weekend.
I like the humid weather, for me we get too much cool /cold weather in NZ through the year.

Re: General February Weather
I'm curious why, for the last 2 days/nights, the easterly flow dies away overnight and turns gentle southerly, only to turn easterly again in the morning. Interesting effect. Losing the onshore flow has helped the temperature to drop away several degrees below the forecast minimum.

Re: General February Weather
I thought it might be land breeze. I have seen easterlies do this in the past as well.Manukau heads obs wrote:will be a land breeze at night
Anyway, a grey day here with some light drizzle patches, high of 27 doesn't look too likely here at this stage.

Re: General February Weather
hottest day of the year, unsurprisingly.
hit 33.2°C earlier - sitting on 32.8°C right now.
DP was 21.1°C but dropped away quite a bit since 2pm to 15.7°C now.
DP of 21.1°C was a station record.
