Southerly gales and heavy rain, March 3rd to 6th
Just looking at the latest weather data and it seems very cold but also wet and windy for eastern parts of the country coming up this week-yuk! Are we all thinking it's looking fairly average?

Re: Wet southerly
Monday looks icy with some coastal lightning/small hail a possibility given the airmass is so cold and sea temps quite warm. Both Christchurch and Wellington should hear thunder.
Tuesday has the low pressure system deepening out to the east of the country. Something to watch.
GFS 4 day rainfall prediction for what its worth.

Re: Wet southerly
I think it will be a windy, as well as, a wet southerly this coming week with that depression out to the east of Canterbury/Otago really revving it up.

Re: Wet southerly
It's time for a downpour, well, heavy rain or substantial rain and this system could deliver, as a result of a series of events, developing to the east of the SI.
Warm seas, cold upper air temperatures, etc., you have the ingredients.

Re: Wet southerly
Yes looks a perfect setup for flooding type rains some were in canterbury
Looks a lot like a late winter or sept oct type wet windy system we get here in Canterbury and I wouldn't be surprised if the wind flow was more on shore than the forecast has it.

Re: Wet southerly
Sea temps as Nzstorm has mentioned and given enough daytime heating before the trough arrives this arvo should spark up thunderstorms/hail. Heres hoping!

Re: Wet southerly
we just had a very impressive hail storm pass through.
hail up to 10-15cm across for 5 or so mins.
never seen anything like it.
tried to grab a photo and video but might have been too late.
temp dropped from 14.9°C at 3:23pm to 7.4°C now 20min's later.

The skies today have been delivering weather that you would expect in June or July
