Ex-TC Lusi affecting NZ - Mar 14-17

It was a fizzer for some,while other areas took a pounding ,that would the best way to describe ex TC Lusi,a total of 12.5mm of rain here which is not enough as a couple of warm days and it will be as dry as before.
Oh well,maybe the next system can bring some decent rain.

Yeah ex tropical cyclone Lusi just as crazy as an ex can be and wet and wild as she can be
It does look like its pulling to the east now yeah, the N-NW flow should kick in overnight now.
Still a comfortable 15.8C here.

Back from the west coast, bugger all there with 8mm up to 3pm no wind and warm with 20C over night and 22C today.
Mostly dry though the alps on the way home and only 28mm recorded here in Rangiora and currently dry with no wind, even a bog standard southerly front could have done better than this so a bit of a fizzer really and much like the worst snow storm in 20 years we didn't have last winter with all the over hyped coverage around it( god help us this winter).

Yes that unfortunate event and lead up to it still sits fresh in my mind melja, I wonder when some of those private forecasters will keep quiet 4-5 days out from a potential major event when The Press calls up to get a quote and some weight to the sensational headline...perhaps waiting until 1-2 days out would be a better idea!

It doesnt help when the conversation with the reporter who rings goes like this:
"How much rain do you expect to fall?"
"Between 40 and 60mm seems the most likely outcome"
"Is there is a risk of more?"
"Yes, this system has the potential to deliver 60-100mm, but that doesnt look like the most likely outcome at this stage"

And then all that appears in the paper and online is "Forecaster says this storm has the potential to bring 60-100mm to the region".

Nor does it help when they ring back the next day and ask for any updates, and I say "It now looks better, 30-40mm is the likely range" and the next day the headline says "City braced for deluge".

I have been working on downed powerlines by trees in Waitipu, Huia, West Auckland from 0200h this morning.
The weather out West was not bad after 1000 onwards.

Recorded 42.2mm here. Still a significant event with my station's average March rainfall (35mm) falling in the 10 hours from 5am and it also broke the March daily rain record that was set on the 5th.
