Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
Wintry mix of rain, hail and sleet in Akaroa, driven in by howling southerly gale. Dusting of snow above about 400m.

a few cm (would say 3-5cm) of the white stuff at work @ 550m in Reefton.
The truck had some crunchy stuff on it this morning in town @ 200m as well. I thought it may have been hail, but have since had it confirmed that it did snow for a short period which then turned to rain.

The dewpoint is still 8C here, thought the air would be drier than that.
Our coolest day of the year so far with a high of 15.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
The lowest May temp ever recorded at Queenstown Aero in Frankton since records began in 1969 was -8.8C in 1988. It was also the only May Queenstown has recorded temps below -8C. Queenstown's generally warmer lakefront Gardens site only got down to -4.7C that month, and its lowest recorded May temp from 1871-1881 and 1930-2014 is -6.7C in 1965.David wrote:The forecast low for Queenstown tonight is back to a more "modest" -9C now

This video shows sea spray being whipped up in Evans Bay, Wellington by the strong north westerlies yesterday.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
After the fine clear night , the cool southerly moved on through this morning.
I never saw any sleet or snow but come hail and graupal.
The wintry showers that moved through around 2pm, had a good Cb form in behind it.

Re: Cold Outbreak, 24th - 27th May
There was a heavy shower with hail mid-afternoon in Akaroa, plus some snowflakes at about 250m on Hilltop-Akaroa highway and abit of sleet near Lake Ellesmere about 5pm.
