General December Weather
First day of summer looks cool but at least there will be a warming trend from Tuesday on.
A polar trough will progress across the North Island tomorrow with a few lightning strikes possible over the central ranges and in the east. There is a slight risk of a hail storm in the Hawkes Bay as the southerly arrives.
GFS afternoon shower chart for tomorrow.

Re: General December Weather
MS have a moderate risk for most of the central and lower North Island and top of the South island in this morn's T-Storm Outlook for today…
MetService - Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: Midnight Monday 1 Dec 2014
Issued at: 8:37am Monday 1 Dec 2014
A cold showery south to southwesterly flow covering the South Island and lower North Island this morning, will spread northwards onto the central North Island today. At the same time, temperatures are expected to become colder aloft causing the atmosphere over central New Zealand to become increasingly unstable this afternoon and evening.
Scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening over the Nelson region, and about many parts of the North Island south of about Rotorua and Te Kuiti.
These thunderstorms will produce localised heavy rain and hail. The hail is mostly expected to be in the 10-15mm diameter range, however there may be signifcant hail accumulation in a few places this afternoon, particularly about the NELSON region. Hail can cause damage to crops and orchards, and make driving conditions hazardous.
A low risk of thunderstorms covers other areas from Bay of Plenty and South Waikato southwards to northern Westland as indicated on the chart.
No other thunderstorms or significant convection expected over New Zealand today.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=11367244The days of driving to the summit of Auckland's volcanic cones are coming to an end, starting with a ban on all vehicles up Mt Eden.
This could be followed by a ban covering the summits of other volcanoes with road access - One Tree Hill, Mt Wellington, Mt Albert, Mt Roskill and Mt Victoria.
A new authority to manage 14 volcanic cones yesterday approved in principle extending a 2011 ban on buses driving to the summit of Mt Eden/Maungawhau to all vehicles.

Runnign the Kepler Challenge again on Saturday. A lot of unseasonable snow last couple of weeks, but looks to be relatively warmer and ok this week. Maybe a sprinkle of rain on Saturday to stop any overheating...

Re: General December Weather
I use Mt Roskill these days as Mt Eden is too busy. I think the people/car problems are on Mt Eden.David wrote:

Re: General December Weather
I see MS have a moderate risk of T-Storms for Canterbury tomorrow arvo…
MetService - Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: Midnight Thursday 4 Dec 2014
Issued at: 10:39am Wednesday 3 Dec 2014
The cold front continues moving north over the South Island during the afternoon and evening. Over the Canterbury Plains and the foothills during the afternoon there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms, mainly with the frontal change. Any thunderstorms that develop will have the potential to bring localised heavy rain of 10-20mm/hr, hail 10-20mm in diameter and strong winds gusting 90-110km/hr.
Over remaining high country areas of Canterbury and also about northern and eastern areas of Otago there is a low of thunderstorms during the afternoon, while over Marlborough there is a low risk of thunderstorms in the evening.
No thunderstorms or significant convection expected in other areas of the country during the period.
