Always a bit of a gamble to pick the right time frame to chase.

2 weeks, chasing until the 20th. Thought we would chance the mid season dynamics, hopefully no stubborn ridge!

I want to see a normal Winter in the US with the storm season kicking off in the SE states Feb/March,a normal weather pattern over the US next year would be good.

Our early season (18th April to 23rd May) in 2013 didn't pan out well. Few low risks, couple of Supercells only in the first 3 weeks, no tornados.

I see California has been getting early winter rain storms...typical of an El Nino weather pattern
if El Nino persists, what will that do for next years tornado season?

El Nino as far as I'm aware doesn't bode well for tornadoes numbers. Less severe outbreak days, which on one hand isn't great for chasing but is good for the local communities.

I think el nino will be okay. We may not have el nino type pattern next May anyway.

The El Nino is predicted to last into the US spring but I believe it is expected to be a weak event. But there are so many other factors that can spoil a season for stormchasers, ENSO is the least of our concerns.

when you look at that tornado number chart you put up...there does not seem to be any pattern?
i.e its a bit of a lottery what the season will end up like?

I think there is more of a pattern when it comes to severe outbreaks, being much less likely in a El Nino year. But like mention above tbh I don't think it would effect ones decision whether you would go chase or not

Interestingly earlier studies have shown no statistical bias but a paper submitted this year at the American Met conference shows there is a bias favouring La Nina for Tornadoes. But the researchers say moderate to strong ENSO events.

Accuweather are forecasting the severe storms/tornadoes to be east of the I35 this spring. I have to say I am sceptical of this prediction.
