Re: General December Weather
Hit 30.1°C today here. December still running cooler than the last 4 years, but if this warmer weather continues that could change.
Looks like we might get 1 more day of this before the rain comes.
edit - just saw the previous post. Damn me for fast forwarding through the weather!
Wow - we're famous.
The NIWA station recorded 28.6°C.

Yes, you should stick your weather station on the new MetService "Your Station" at http://www.metservice.com/towns-cities/reefton

Reefton could be the nation's "Hot Spot" for December?

Re: General December Weather
I got my station set up on there last week.
I assume that's where they got the "unofficial 30°C" from.

The "barber" in full roar this morning, but it is blue dome all around outside, been for a hop along the beach and it is like glass out there.. very well might see another 30 around the district today.

Re: General December Weather
Already sitting on 29.3°C here so I think another 30+ is a shoe-in.
Can definitely feel it more today than yesterday as well.
My December record is 33.8°C so don't think that's under threat at this stage.
I skipped my run last night due to the heat (replaced it with some mountain biking to generate my own cooling breeze) and don't wanna miss 2 days!

Some really dry air inland South Island this afternoon. Wanaka Airport is reading just 12% humidity!

Re: General December Weather
Well we hit 33.0°C in the end for my third warmest December day.
It's still 29.9°C and my run was not a particularly pleasant experience.
I wonder if we'll make the news again!

Re: General December Weather
Next upper trough crosses NZ at the weekend. There looks to be a chance for thunder over the North Island on Saturday afternoon but while the upper dynamics look supportive, the instability is minor compared to what we observed yesterday. Still, dewpoints of 20C possible and the front timed for afternoon when instability most is likely. Something to watch at least.

Re: General December Weather
We have fog here, which is unusual for December in these parts. Looks a nice day ahead.
Looking like tomorrows front brings the chance an elevated thunderstorm but there is not much instability there. The upper air is warm and convection tops need to reach about -20C to get any lightning. Will be pockets of heavy rain.
Next week actually looking more settled!

Almost 27*C here in Matangi this afternoon/evening.
Beaut of a day after the morning cloud burnt off, Raglan cooler with the refreshing Sea Breeze.

Re: General December Weather
GFS still suggesting a risk of storms for mid central Waikato and possibly parts of Northland. Metservices morning outlook not agreeing, lets see what the evening update has to say.
Even though lots of cloud is expected tomorrow (High DP's), it seems there is a upper level trough-albeit weak over western to Central Waikato around 4-6 PM or so.
Lush Theta-e's associated with the tropic like NW flow, means there should be some convective potential tomorrow.
Also an upper level jet will be swinging in later half of the day.
Just really depends on upper level conditions combining at the right time if SFC convection gets going, despite the high cloud, otherwise we are going to have a weak upper level setup with heaps of rain to boot.

Re: General December Weather
Still looking favourable for elevated convection and an associated thunder risk. 850mb dewpoints are modelled to be 13C today which is huge moisture!
That polar trough over the South Island tomorrow may be cold enough for a thunderstorm risk over eastern mid South Island. 500mb -20C with surface onshore flow progged.

Re: General December Weather
Yeah some good solid cracks of thunder just up the road from Melja.. just turned into heavy rain now with gusty squalls/winds.. certainly didn't expect to be waking up to this.
