Ah the mighty Kauri. Cutting can be grown form the younger plants and is usually the easiest way of propagating this species.

I would take some cuttings with a least four nodes and around 12cm long, making sure to cut just below the bottom node and to reduce most the leaves by at least half. Preferable to select shoots that have apical domominance. Some rooting hormone would be beneficial and would speed up root development. I would stick them in some sharp sand and potting mix 50/50 and place the tray in the shade, don’t over water. ;)

Hey Andy,

question for you on your region - on the highway between Clyde and Cromwell you can see a large dark coloured structure (looks like a large area of brown bricks or blocks) on the side of the hill on the opposite side of Lake Dunstan to the highway - looks to recently have had some graffiti removed off it... what is it?

I saw it a couple of times but never saw reference to it anywhere.

Cheers,

G

Slip stabilisation for a landslide and was done in the early 90’s. The graffiti slogan read “ Hands off Beaumont “in relation to another Hydro dam planed down stream. The team of environmentalists were never caught, and was well done as it was not an easy task, especially when done at night.

Ah cheers for the explanation - I'd wondered if it was some sort of monument or something. I guess the highway and the dam are monument enough!

Cheers,

1) Whats your real name:- Neill

2) How old are you:- 40

3) Which city are you from:- Tauranga

4) Are you a resident in NZ:- Born & bred here (Originally from Christchurch).

5) What do you do for a crust:- Communications and I&T Technician. Also repair appliance for a friends business when he is too busy to cope on his own.

6) Hobbies:- Geocaching, Amatuer Radio. Possibly going to get very keen on weather watching in the future though.

7) How long have you been interested in the weather:- Umm, only interested in severe events in the vicinity of the BOP. I was the first to get pics out to the media of the Eastern BOP Flooding last year, but the guy I was carting round got lots more out, just not as quickly.

8) What got you interested:- Being flooded! 3rd time in 5 years occured on Easter Friday. Thank heavens for a phone call from a friend who is a cop and was on duty, his advance warning (only a few minutes) allowed me to prepare for it and minimise the damage.

9) What aspect of the weather interests you:- Storms, storms and more storms, any severe event... Snow, known to take a day off work without warning (tough for the boss) to go grab photo's of low lying snow events. Flooding, known to go into flooded areas to take pictures, amazing how taking a police officer stopping traffic something to eat and drink can usually get him to let you through to take photo's ;) Tornados, I should have spent Good friday cleaning up the flood damage at home, but no, there was tornado damage to look at! Most impressive too! I was awe inspired, the number of trees broken off in uniform fashion and dumped hundreds of metres away was incredible. Why is it I often don't have my camera when I need it?

10) What is it that you like about this forum:- It was pointed out to me by another member, hopefully I might get a little more warning next time we flood. Still, modifications to the outside garden, a large peice of aluminium over a doorway, and heaps of silicon rubber hopefully will stop it in it's tracks next time. It was me that was outside in the torrential rain with thunder and lightning simultaneously crashing around me, the clap was sufficent to trigger the car alarms in their carports! (and, they aren't very sensitive either). We are still having lightning damaged appliances bought in for repair, more than two weeks after the event.

John (micheal?), I assume you watched that program on TV one tonight about trains in NZ. Called "off the rails" I believe.

Quite cool, I didn't relise there were so many rails in the Southland / Otago area. Definately somewhere to go and visit at some point. And some of the lines are still running even though in a touristy sense. Ever been down there John and been on the trains???!!

Looking foward to future episodes.

Yes there were lots of railways/branch-lines in Southland possibly was the best rail served province in the country?
Lots there for the "Ghost" railway enthusiast :)

Yeah that railway branched off at Balclutha/Finegand and headed towards a place called Tahakopa. closed in 1971. It was built to extend to another branch that extended out from Invercargill towards Tokanui bit it never eventuated. The main railway had a easier route through Clinton/Gore to Invercargill :)

1. Whats your real name:- Jeff Northcott

2. How old are you:- 44

3. Which city are you from:- Christchurch

4. Are you a resident in NZ:- Yes, born in Te Kuiti, raised in Aria, a small dot on the map about 30km south of Te Kuiti.

5. What do you do for a crust:- Tech support engineer at Tait Electronics having done a few other jobs in the past but all involving radio communications. Spent 3 and a half years in the UK from 1987 to 1991 and then about 2 years in the Philippines from 1991 to 1993.

6. Hobbies:- Running my weather station which involves my original hobby of electronics and a newer one, computers. I also enjoy cycling and regulars on the forum will know my occasional comments on the weather when I'm cycling to and from work. Haven't been on a cycle tour since I spent 5 month cycling around part of continental Europe in 1991. My interest in weather has stemmed from cycling and trying not to get wet.

7. How long have you been interested in the weather:- Since about 1970.

8. What got you interested:- I got my Dad to buy a rain-gauge to sit on a post and record the daily rainfall on the chart that was supplied with the rain-gauge. I do not have those records now but as a 10 year old, it seemed that it rained every day, especially in Spring in the King Country.
The river across the paddocks used to flood regularly as it was blocked with willows in those days. In the 60's, there only had to be a black cloud on the horizon for the power to go off. Lightning and loud thunder, heavy rain, rainy weeks and months, good frosts with ice on the inside of the window and squally showers (something we don't see much of in Ch'ch) were all part of the weather to a boy growing up in the country.

9. What aspect of the weather interests you:- Everyday weather is interesting to any cyclist I think. The few thunderstorms we get in Christchurch are interesting but its not the place to live for a lot of thunder activity. I like the changes in the weather, the nor'wester first gusting through, the same with a southerly and some can be heard coming, a roar from the south. The skies over the plains have some interesting cloud patterns, virga, nor'west arch, great sunsets at times too. I also enjoy the cold conditions, (looking out from beside the heater) not just snow but foggy days. I've had some interesting cycling up on the port when it has snowed and the roads are closed.

10. What is it that you like about this forum:- Looking at other peoples weather reports, learning from posts and the comminity here. :D
