Re: General February Weather
good to get those showers today (5mm here)
although places further north of me missed out (the manukau is a bit of a 'sink hole' for showers from the east)

Re: General February Weather
i see some instability over the country tomorrow, east and west of the south island mainly, moisture looks very dry though around Christchurch city going by BSCH models so unsure if anything will happen.
Winds aloft at 500mb isnt favourable either, 15 knt westerly.

Some towering Cu showers drifting onto the Auckland area from the east today but they missed my area, only a couple of light showers here.

The heavy shower risk has cleared from Auckland but will be back Thursday by the looks. But weekend will be fine.

Re: General February Weather
the showers yesterday were due in part to wind convergence..where the easterly flow around the high was slowly done moving across the NI and into the tasman (isobars further apart), as well as due to a bit vorticity from the jet stream to the north (which has dragged alot of moisture from the remains of the cyclone across in the upper levels) and also from that cut off upper low over the SI
all that should still exist today...to a degree..so just need some sea breeze convergence as another trigger

Both ukmet and gfs are showing warming around 700mb, hence my reason for no heavy showers today.

Re: General February Weather
there is some patchy rain around from some mid deck cloud currently out to my NW and over the coro
to me the sky still looks unstable enough
if we get a sea breeze convergence develop
time will tell

Re: General February Weather
I'm very surprised at how quick and active this TS has developed. A lot of thunder, heavy rain and a few flashes. Now it's pissing down! Can see some rotation also. Just sitting on top of my place, not even moving

Has been interesting looking towards TC from about 3:30pm.
Uplifts and possible CB formations, although weak.

Took this photo from near me, looked better a little earlier on and seemed to be a good amount of scferics on the radio. Not much lightning seen though but did see a couple of flashes in the cloud.

Re: General February Weather
I'm picking its weakening as it has come off the foothills, good photography as always from Aaron.

Re: General February Weather
Yeah, it definitely weakened as it came off the foothills. Started out over Mt Peel, as usual. I was coming home from going to Ashburton so raced back to get my camera, should've had it with me, doh! So could've got a better pic but oh well.. Thanks anyway

Re: General February Weather
An unstable upper trough crossing the North Island Friday but unfortunately the surface winds are SW which pushes any convergence out to the east. (Bay of Plenty).

It has been the least humid Summer I can remember in Auckland, very few muggy nights. Very little in the way of sub tropical troughing making it this far south this year.

Re: General February Weather
I notice that the El Nino Index has gone back to zero....
certainly there is no warmer than normal water where it traditionally is in the pacific for an el nino to be supported anymore
(the NW pacific is much warmer than normal though, which is part and parcel of the unusual weather patterns over the USA currently)
