Re: General April Weather
The dewpoint around 14C this week in Auckland so a little bit of humidity in the air for a milder feel to our weather.
Average to above temps across NZ this week generally so a different weather week to last week.

Both GFS and ACCESS going for a strong cold from next Tuesday, a little unusual for both models to be in agreement 8 days out!

Re: General April Weather
definitely looks like showers for the upper half of the North Island Thursday with 700mb temps plunging to -3C. Could even be another landspout around any surface boundaries that develop.

Re: General April Weather
That waterspout in the big smoke looked impressive, and sounds like your guys up north got a fair bit of rain too. I was wondering what the soil moisture deficit in the Waikato is now?
Got 19.4mm in the last 24 hours to now which is a lot more than I was expecting. Today's high was only 10.1C

Re: General April Weather
since it was over land, it was a landspout
who ever first called it a waterspout was mistaken
also I would hardly call a rural dairy service town of 8000 the big smoke

Ok to be more specific I read that it was on the manukau harbour by the airport, sure one side is city and the other side is clarkes beach but Jesus it's close enough, no need for the smart ass bloody attitudes. I know auckland has a lot of rural, I lived there for 5 years.

How can that map show areas like Gisborne with soil moisture deficit similar to areas in North Canterbury when much of the Gisborne district had over 70-80mm of rain in the third week of March

People in the city/airport region thought it was over the harbourOk to be more specific I read that it was on the manukau harbour by the airport,
but it was in fact well in land, south of Waiuku

Looking like some good lightning activity on the way for the South Island West Coast/Alps Sunday/Monday time frame, spill over lightning possible Monday.
North Island likely to get some thunder activity as well. A major upper level system Monday!

Looking like spill over chances are on Monday and for the upper half of South Island. But that's just my assessment, I could be wrong.melja wrote:Oh good i will be in the mackenzie country this weekend so will catch some good spill over storms i hope.

Re: General April Weather
850mb winds for midday Monday. They suggest there could be isolated severe squalls down the west of the North Island also upper South Island with the front if instability is sufficient. When the airmass is unstable the cb can bring the strong wind aloft down to the surface. Taranaki looking to have the best exposure to this.

Models suggesting the front is forecast to come post the mid to upper level jet, however the remnants will still be there.NZstorm wrote:850mb winds for midday Monday. Re: General April Weather
The upper level system that gave Sydney severe hail yesterday will be coming into the west of NZ tomorrow afternoon, but the air mass will of coarse be modified and not so unstable.
Upper South Island to Northland/Bay of Plenty will have a marginal squall risk. Also a small possibility of a tornado.

Lovely weather today. I see the Northerlies are forecast to gust up to 55 knots (100 km/h) in the Hauraki gulf tomorrow. An indoors day
