Re: USA 2015
A couple of active days coming up for the Texas Panhandle, tomorrow and day after. Moist air with good low level directional shear.
I see accuweather predicting a return of the cold NW flow to the midwest for the last week of April and first week of May. I hope they are wrong as thats not a pattern we want in May!

The risk is always arriving to a quiet pattern , you don't mind a few quiet days.
I notice the AO index is forecast to move from positive to neutral/slightly negative for the last week of April, I would have thought this to be a positive sign.

I see Air NZ is now going to start flying into Houston directly from Auckland in code share with United. That's great news for us trying to get to the Midwest in the shortest time and opens up cheap and quick flights to other centres like Kansas city, Oklahoma city and Denver.

I think It's good to avoid crowded Los Angeles airport if you can.
You can fly direct to the Midwest via Australia with the likes of Quantas, a bit of a haul but there have been some very good prices available at times.

Yes, not looking forward to transiting LAX this trip.
Looking like it will be a very active weekend in the US.

Re: USA 2015
I'll be there around May 11. Haven't booked the flight from NYC to DFW yet as I'd rather wait on what the models are indicating and wait there instead of the plains if it is ridgey!
EC showing a short wave trough moving over the four corners region so may miss some severe weather potential around May 8.

Looking like the next 6-7 days will be pretty quiet. Steven you may arrive in time for the above action Willo mentioned.

Re: USA 2015
Looking like a moist convective system passing through in the 6th to 8th timeframe. Beyond that the gfs and Eu differing a bit on the 12Z runs with a ridge showing up on Eu. I think the overall pattern though should favour shortwaves rather than a stagnant ridge. And also I suspect the central and northern plains will provide good late season chasing this year due El Nino.

Re: USA 2015
Models beyond 7 days are unreliable however the upper level pattern showing in the longer range GFs makes me think it will probably be a stormy May.

I would have gone earlier in the season but I had to go as late as possible due to work and leave available. Turns out in the end my contract wasnt renewed so could have gone earlier after all! At least my new job don't mind me taking 3 weeks leave only a month into the job!

Looking forward to the beautiful skies and landscapes. Might get a visit to the Grand Canyon in as well and perhaps Grand Teton National Park.

Flew Auckland-Sydney-Dallas yesterday, then a 3 hr drive to Wichita Falls so a big travel day.
A storm for our arrival at Wachita Falls, thunderstorms here until 2am, gusty winds and marble size hail observed also
A few lightning shots from near our hotel yesterday evening.
