Interesting to see the coastal shower bands more onshore this morning SSW movement, so the troughs seem to have tilted the flow.
First shower here in Rolleston and its an intermix of sleet and the odd flake, could be an interesting day probably until about 1pm but a chance for a coastal event now maybe.

Sleet and a few flakes mixed in here too, in Upper Riccarton. Some strong wind gusts with the shower also.

Herald has a report and video of it snowing in Napier, looked like somewhere near the beach, currently 1.9°.
I grew up there and don't ever remember that happening..

Just getting a thunderstorm here atm. Had a wild night last night. Lots of lightning, 100km/h winds, snow and hail. Got about an inch only and a couple trees down. Very loud thunder on and off all night.

It must frustrate you Richy not having a radar and can someone tell me why the showers moving over Invercargill look only to be light while a woman i know there has said they have been heavy at timesRichyDunedin wrote:Just getting a thunderstorm here atm. Re: Cold Weather on the way plus good sub antartic storm brewing
Any showers have been light. I guess it's like I read a couple of times yesterday, 'snowing heavily in Invercargill' which was rubbish. A few flakes after a decent shower of hail with a very cold wind!Richard wrote:It must frustrate you Richy not having a radar and can someone tell me why the showers moving over Invercargill look only to be light while a woman i know there has said they have been heavy at timesRichyDunedin wrote:Just getting a thunderstorm here atm. Bit of hail here just now, despite 12.4C temperature, must be much colder upper level but also though good height in these clearning showers moving through now

Yea it can be annoying at times having no radar. Has been a wild last 24 hours in Dunedin. A thunderstorm that passed through just after 3am reportedly lifted roofs, produced blizzard conditions to sea level and lightning strikes cut power to parts of the city.
I see the media is reporting snow falling in Napier.

re Napier, You could see that front moving right up the Wairapa coast line and through Hawkes Bay on the rain radar
(the same front that gave a dusting also to inland Canterybury on its way through)
was a short flurry of flakes in Napier from what I have read
Huge swell on the west coast here

Coronet peak reporting quite a dump of snow overnight, half a meter and was still snowing! Impressive
