Re: General June Weather
The clear sky north of here (Manawatu) at sunrise this morning has a strange look about it. There's a very thin layer with a bluish wispy texture and it's very high up. Texture fading as the sun rises further but it was very noticeable when the sun angle was near horizontal. Definitely not cirrus. Last time I saw anything like this was when that Chilean volcano (Chaltén?) went off a few years ago and we saw the ash from it off and on for a few weeks afterwards. Could this be volcanic ash as well? There was another eruption in Chile recently.

Re: General June Weather
A sustained period of much colder weather looks to be coming for NZ as a whole from Monday onwards but in particular the South Island. Temperatures will stay in single digits for long periods as well as severe frosts from about Wednesday morning onwards as well. Unfortunately precipitation looks to be minimal for the snow lovers out there though...

Re: General June Weather
Yes, it's quite possible Chile's Calbuco volcano eruptions at the end of April may still have some lingering effects here. It was Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano eruptions in June 2011 that affected air travel here (more-so in Australia), although I think the initial Chaiten volcano eruptions between May and Nov of 2008 were much larger.harleyb wrote:The clear sky north of here (Manawatu) at sunrise this morning has a strange look about it. Re: General June Weather
Lifted roofing-iron in Granity, just north of Westport, has been blamed on a 'mini tornado' at about 12:30pm today, although I'd imagine the 110 km/h winds (gusts?) quoted from MS could possibly do it?

Had 13mm over the last day or so,lucky we are close enough to the mountains to cop a few showers, those east of here would have had little.

Wow seems to be a monster brewing. Anyone have any input on the system we are looking at for early-mid next week?

Re: General June Weather
Models now reducing the 500mb thickness down to 521 in the latest run for Canterbury, Metservice also has snow for Timaru on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what Tony from Blueskies thinks about these latest developments! As yet his page hasn't been updated...

Re: General June Weather
I thought so looking at Blueskies a few minutes ago which 4 days out is probably not a bad idea! Any real possibility though of the Christchurch region getting more then the 5-10mm you have forecast at this stage for Mon-Wed?TonyT wrote:I'm playing it down at this stage...Bradley wrote:Models now reducing the 500mb thickness down to 521 in the latest run for Canterbury, Metservice also has snow for Timaru on Tuesday. Re: General June Weather
The flow looks likely to turn more onshore (southerly) on Tuesday, so thats the most likely day to see some action. Until then, too southwest for Canterbury to get much (unless you live on Banks Peninsula). But the EC model doesnt have it as cold as the GFS in the critical lower layer, so I think a "middling" prediction of snow level on Tuesday is best at this stage. Also, the EC wants to bring the anticyclone on quickly on Wednesday, whereas the GFS leaves it sitting further west. That will be a factor to watch too.

Re: General June Weather
Yes 521 thickness looks a tad low doesn't it, maybe more like 524 would be more realistic which suggests a snow line around 200m if the models stay consistent?

Bob Crowder reported hail and a thunderclap from that cloud around BP, from Motukarara this afternoon from those Cb clouds. They looked good from Halswell. Nice recordence, there Steven.

Re: General June Weather
Today should be a decent wee set up for thunderstorms and hail from mid canterbury northwards, i dont often pick such good chances in winter but the trough coming through is strong and its meeting warmish air.
It will be short and sharp though, the MS are onto it id be saying 10-20mm hail as well, given the upper jet is strong around 50kts and -28c upper air.
If it was summer the hail would be bigger.
So watch from 2pm onwards
