Very accurate, they have been incredibly accurate in regards to this system. Interestingly enough it says no snow in the city but as I said snow for the airport lol. Only around 50m in difference but clearly that is alot in this kind of setup...

Is that measured on a large and open level space with a rigid surface?
People around here are hunting out the deepest drifts they can find against fences and guestimating with very generous upward rounding.
If they were to be believed, I'd be sending this message from my house within an almost subterranean snow cavity.
That's measured from the Middle of my lawn which is out in the open, no trees near or any fences for that fact. Using a trusty old plastic ruler. Keep in mind it has been very heavy snow since 12pm
Stuck on 2 degrees here. I see Metservice have temps rising later tonight and into the early hours which would make sense if its going NE. I would say highly unlikely that ChCh will see snow, if it was going to happen I think it would have already. Inland must be getting quite epic though...

I tend to agree, although i still can see a window where the temp drops.. between 9pm and 3am before the temp rises again.... could be interesting.

CantyWX wrote:Paul, thanks for your input! In a nutshell, what do you think the chances are of decent snow in chch overnight? i would think flurries here and there are likely?
Three thoughts:
1. Take a look at the 3hrly rain progs under the 3 day rain tab on the Metservice web site. It shows precip hanging in over over Canterbury all night with a clearance in the morning.
2. I see the latest IR satellite image (also Metservice web site) shows a hooked shaped cloud (probably an occluded front) curling into the low in the Tasman Sea. This has still to move across the South Island which it will likely do tonight and which will be the reason the prog keeps the precip going all night. Whether Christchurch will get sig snow I don't know.
3. I suggest we wait for the latest warning updates coming out soon from the guys on shift. They have lots more info at the moment than I do.
We will wait in anticipation then! I have a feeling, one of those hunches that something might happen tonight. down to 1.9deg at the airport now... another 0.5deg and we are talking sleet, and another degree and snow will be falling me thinks.
Snow showers to sleet here,a big difference in snow depths from the east side of town to the west.At least 5cm of snow at 120 metres.Chains required from Ashburton to Methven.
I wonder if the best window for snow will be between 4-8am when it is generally the coldest point of the night.
I dont think the wind will shift NE, the undercutting southerly will keep feeding in.
But anyway rain/sleet has since picked up again after a good hour of lighter precipitation.

Yes, I was going to post something along those lines, that there is still that the tasman low to move across the SI, which will add fuel to the fire so to speak

We lost the power a couple of hours ago. Still coming down thick and fast. In my opinion it's probably best that chch doesn't get any, tends to turn into chaos when the city gets snow
