Iberian peninsula heatwave, June-july 2015

This sunday the temperatures are expected to reach over 45ºc in some places.
It's possible to break some of june records and some all time records in some cities, not only that the heat is expected to return next week with temperatures of 45ºc or more so is possible to break all time temperture of europe

Yes indeed, Blade - it looks like southern parts of Europe will be experiencing some serious heat from this weekend onwards. As we progress into next week this heat will spread further north and we here in England will see a few days of 30*C+ from the middle of next week. More on this aspect in the UK thread later.

The heat has begun to build over Iberia with temperatures of 40*C+ on Saturday (27th June) over parts of southern Spain + Portugal. Highest temperatures I have seen are:

43.9*C at El Granado (Huelva Province, Spain)
42.9*C at Seville Airport (Spain)
42.5*C at Elvas (Portugal)
42.4*C at Beja (Portugal)
41.9*C at Cordoba Airport (Spain)
41.9*C at Montoro (Cordoba Province, Spain)

It was also hot in the capitals with 37.7*C recorded at Madrid Barajas Airport and 35-36*C reported at the various Lisbon stations.

EDIT: The overnight low into Sunday morning was 27.6*C at Portalegre, Portugal........phew!

Very hot again on Sunday 28th June with the following maximums recorded (mostly in Spain):

44.0*C at Elvas (Portugal)
43.8*C at Montoro
43.7*C at Cordoba Airport
42.6*C at Seville Airport

Similar temperatures today (Monday), but it should be a little cooler on Tuesday - but only by a degree or two.

Wow! Spain is directly underfoot from us, but those temps kinda makes NZ's 42.4C in 1973 (Rangiora) and 41.3C in 2011 (Timaru) look pale in comparison...

The official maximum for western Europe quoted by the WMO is 48.0*C (that's 118.4*F) recorded in Athens on 10th July 1977. Other high temperatures accepted as representative are 47.4*C at Amareleja (nr Beja, Portugal) recorded on 1st August 2003 and 47.2*C at Murcia (Spain) recorded on 4th July 1994.

The 7th (Tuesday) was the warmest day so far this year with the highest temperatures recorded being 45.9*C at Xativa and 44.9*C at Ontinyent, both in the province of Valencia. It was a little cooler on Wednesday with maximums of 43-44*C and cooler still on Thursday at around 42*C - that is still hot though!

There has been some debate on UK forums with a Spanish counterpart about the siting of some of the stations and they do look a little ropey. They are not your standard sites surrounded by grass, but lets say they are very urban.
