If undercutting does occur, it should increase the rainfall and maybe even lower the freezing level inland, even though MetService has it only dropping to about 1500m in the south.

Wet from midafternoon around Akaroa (probably similar in Chch), though cool (about 11C in afternoon) southerly arrived about midmorning. I guess the skifields are getting a coating, though probably not to low levels. I see Tara Hills (near you Gary?) was 6C at 6PM with recent rain.

Tons of bloody rain, and all day too. I was just out in the Lindis and it must have been at least 5Â° colder in there than here in town. The rain has eased to showers now though.

Well I buggered that one up!!

I haven't emptied my rain gauge since the last southerly front!!! so ive ended up with over 50mm for yesterdays/todays rainfall

Mt Hutt got 25cm yesterday, and the latest webcam shows it thickly coated. Mountains should look good from Chch tomorrow morning, if much of the cloud clears.

Haha! I did that too with our manual gauges!

And yes about those frosty temps: it's down to 2.4Â° now and dropping like a stone.

out of curisotiy (sp?) have you ever compared manual gauges with the ones connected up to the comp to see how accurate a manual gauge is??

also Manual is all im using and since Im not all that worried about hooking up a weather station to my comp, just wanting to see if a manual is accurate enough??

Eye MT my rain-gauge every day at the appointed time and now since we sold the section next-door I have my rain-gauge now nailed to the decking just outside my french-doors. Real handy eh!
I prefer manual anytime.
I see you can get good ones from the $2 shop for only $2

Yes and you can get weather stations from nature discoveries that ware and tear within 2 years that was my first weather station got a small one which is more economic and also a pool thermometer which reads to very accurate levels try it if you have one.
But within 5 months of having my weather station it broke due to hailstorm with hail the size of peas i guess because the sun made it very brittle.

Here's a capture I got off my video camera from that night storms were firing on the coast. There's a few better ones but I haven't found them within an hour of video! I'll have to watch the tape at home again, mark down the times and then try again.

When videoing this I've put the gain right up so that'll add to more noise but it gives you an idea of what west coast storms look like from Chch.

The other one I've got has a bit of a bolt but I'm yet to fine it within the video ! Will try to get soon.

Jade stadium is sitting about quater of the way in from the left, the reflection of the lights is the eastury.

When we first made the weather station data available for public viewing, a constant stream of comments flowed in, all to the effect that "the rain gauge is underreading!"

After a while I began to suspect they may be correct (hell, all these people can't be wrong, can they?), so we bought a bunch of manual gauges and set them out around the place.

The result? We discovered that the electronic tipper gauge was slightly OVERreading, due to splash from the wide, flat surface it was mounted on. Otherwise it was completely accurate.

The storm last night, was it right over you? Was it sheet or fork type lightning and was there lots of rain? I doubt hail due to upper air conditions but please tell if you got some! And how frequent was the lightning, ah..and was it very windy at all?

Mainly fork lightning, quite persistant, continous rolling thunder (not too unusual on the coast).
Not much rain (certainly not by West Coast standards).
Can't recall the wind.

We had some a couple of nights ago as well, but not much and quite short lived.

Storm chasing??? - The storms chase me!

We have a two storey house, on a hill top, overlooking the ocean. Great for sitting in bed at night watching the lighning.
