The weird thing about that bottom map when you enlarge it is that Banks Peninsula has no snow....

MetService wrote: Rain is expected to turn to snow above about 500 metres from the Central Plateau and Hawkes Bay southwards overnight, then snow should gradually lower to about 300 metres. The heaviest snow is expected overnight tonight and during Wednesday morning, when 20 to 30cm is expected above 600 metres in Hawkes Bay, the Tararua District and also Taihape, including the Central Plateau.
Cold showery southerlies should then persist for the rest of the week, bringing periods of snow to about 300-400 metres in the east from Wellington to Gisborne and about the central high country.
People are advised that there could be disruption to transport, especially about higher roads and that vulnerable stock could be at risk, especially with significant wind chill.

Yea it was heavy rain and 3.2 degrees in Rotorua this morning. So it would have been snowing on the hills for sure.

News reports and photos of snow falling at a location in western Bay of Plenty this morning near Tauranga, though the place is about 400-500m above sea-level.

Rain moved through 2hours ago bringing sleet, drove up to 600m and was snowing.not much moisture left in this event, I'd be guessing that's the central north island done for now.

Re: Low/Heavy Snow - Central North Island - July 7-10
The polar trough over NZ will re-energise over the North Island today. Looks like Hawkes Bay/Gisborne should see showers get heavier today with heavy snow showers to 400m and some flakes could be observed to sea level. Its quite a significant winter event for Gisborne region which doesn't have a reputation for snow.
700mb temperatures for North island 12pm.

Had a phone call this morning from the old man in Porirua. About 50m ask and there had been a dusting of snow overnight.

Very good dusting of snow in the hills around here in Porirua, looking ominous outside so may get a bit more through the morning.
It's funny how under represented the Wellington area is on these forums.

Snow here on the hills above Tawa, Wellington, this morning.
There are a decent enough amount of people here from Wellington, but if we were to create a topic every time we had severe weather wind warnings you'd lynch us

And now an email update from mum, however no photo evidence to back it up, there are some more small flakes falling.

Calling most of Wgton's strong wind events "severe" is silly as far as I am concerned. The focus in this forum is mainly on "bad weather" events. Personally I am always looking for relatively dry/sunny spells so most of what is posted os of no interest to me. My one year of living in a snow prone climate left me happy to see it on mountains alone. The novelty of city snow wore off fast.kiwisk8er wrote:Snow here on the hills above Tawa, Wellington, this morning.
