Down to -2 here this morning. About the 5th or 6th good frost this morning of the season. We had a decent one late may last year then pretty much nothing for the rest of winter last year..

Frosts 2015

Unread post by jamie »

Lots of busted water pipes in Hamilton today. I was in Auckland all day and was a bit nervous that I wasn't home as the thaw occurred. Being the first time the pipes in my house have ever frozen I wasn't sure how they would behave. Very glad to return to all normal.

Might end up with frozen pipes again tonight :(

Amazing how some people get frozen pipes and others don't, our house is 1940s vintage with no lagging what so ever or insulation for that matter and have never had frozen water.
Got a huge log fire tho and its going 24/7 with free wood.

Temperature has dropped off fast this evening, already down to 5C. Might be in for another frost.

A record minimum recorded here at this site with minus 6.5C being recorded.
I don't know what time as I had a sleep in this morning.
It was still quite frosty at 10am with frost in shattered, sorry, I mean sheltered areas from the sun and ,also, what I call 'perma' frost around the back of the garage.

Down to -9 again this morning
melja mentioned yesterday about why some are getting frozen pipes at temps at i would consider as a moderate frost while others are not,a lot has to do with lagging of pipes, our cold water pipe runs under ground from the tank to under the house(piled wooden ex-NZ forestry), then goes straight up into the house, this section is non-lagged.Yesterday we lost the water for two hours, but this morning we haven't yet the same temps, find that odd really.

A lot of latent heat in water for it to transition states. If the airflow is greater it will freeze quicker, so my suggestion is that either the air flow around the pipe was greater when it froze, or it was down at that temperature longer. In any case, I'd encourage you to lag that pipe, suggesting you have been fortunate it hasn't split somewhere.
