Hi,
First time post, I am a keen surfer and find local wind phenomena interesting for my sport. Orographic, katabatic or stuff like that. Are there journal articles that cover New Zealand local wind phenomena?
Cheers
Pete

Re: Local Winds
Of course there's the obvious Canterbury 'mad-dog' nor'wester and Greymouth's 'barber' sou'easter.
However, one my favourite articles about some other more local wind effects, or rivers of wind, around NZ is one that Bob McDavitt originally wrote in 1995 for NZ Windsurfing magazine. Below is a copy…

I think you'll find there are Patagonian towns/cities that surpass it ...Nev wrote:Of course there's the obvious Canterbury 'mad-dog' nor'wester and Greymouth's 'barber' sou'easter.

Re: Local Winds
Thanks for the replies, I found a few articles on http://www.metsoc.org.nz/publications/journals.
That was interesting about the 'barber' and illustrates the orographic influence.
Is there any books that cover how wind moves in laymans terms, perhaps a sailing book?
