yes, I have seen pictures of the biggest hail stones I have ever seen!

Its interesting to see a supercell of that magnitude develop over the ocean.

Italy would get sea breeze convergence, like NZ does
maybe it drifted out to sea?
the water temperature there is warmer than here too
as is the heat from the sun (a bit closer to the equator)

Naples is on the same latitude as the Kapiti coast!
While the Mediterranean is nothing like USA for storms, they still can get the big supercells due to the hot moist summer conditions they get there, which can be overrun by the jet stream.
The Naples storm developed on a front over the sea west of Naples.
