Yes, the moisture looks good tomorrow with the 850mb dewpoint 10C. But the lapse rates look rather weak on the 12Z run, so looking more like heavy rain showers and just a little bit of lightning.jamie wrote:I like what GFS has done with the moisture for tomorrow. Brought it down towards Taupo where I will be.
As for the 3rd......wow!

Looking like a humid trough to start 2016, back to anticyclonic from the about the 4th.
Showers not ideal for the campers but it will be warm, 1am temps look warm in the north.

Looking likely that there should be some useful rain for CHCH north too. Hopefully the models stay on track for the sake of many of the sad looking trees in this area, even a number of pines are looking half dead.

Tracker showing lightning around Lewis Pass.
The convergence over the North Island tomorrow pm looks to be across the Hunuas (east Auckland). So maybe a cb close to Auckland tomorrow.

I observed contrails in the sky here this afternoon, often indicates colder weather coming within a day or so.

One moved from the west and expanded.
The other moved slowly towards the west.
Both in a north to south direction, possibly at different levels.

EC still keen on around 50mm for mid and north Canterbury for the weekend, I have everything crossed that it happens, boy it was shocking to see how dry the countryside was around the Culverden area the other day...

Re: General December Weather
Just about time to kick off a thread on the new years storm. Looking like significant rain and gales for the upper half of the North Island and other parts of NZ could be affected depending on trajectory of system. 300mm not out of the question for eastern Northland and Coromandal.

Yes, it is sad to say that the rain is falling mainly out at sea instead of inland. Shame that some sort of artificial means is needed to push the rain onshore and over places that need it

Certainly had no rain here and looking like there will be next to nothing this weekend as well. So ending the year with 340mm

Looks like you've had 30-40mm more then Culverden Richard, do you usually get slightly more then them?Richard wrote:Certainly had no rain here and looking like there will be next to nothing this weekend as well. So ending the year with 340mm

Re: General December Weather
That was from a woman who keeps good records, her and her hubie are 10km west of Culverden, they probably get a bit more being closer to the hills. Ive never kept records but now that there's the NIWA station on here it will all be done for me from now onBradley wrote:Looks like you've had 30-40mm more then Culverden Richard, do you usually get slightly more then them?Richard wrote:Certainly had no rain here and looking like there will be next to nothing this weekend as well. Just had a add up and i see Culverden in on 311mm for the year, wonder if anywhere has had lower?

Re: General December Weather
Wow it just goes to show what a difference having good airflow makes to temperature readings. The fan in my weather station had got stuck for some reason. I just got it going again and the temperature reading has dropped 1.5 degrees in the following 7 minutes...

Yes, with half of that 59mm at Whangaporoa falling in just 1 hour, or 43mm in just 2 hours.spwill wrote:It is starting to get dry here now with only 25mm so far for December. I see Whangaporoa got 58.6mm on Xmas Eve.
Whitianga Aero also recorded 59mm that day, while Akld Aero only recorded 11mm.
We managed a more steady 38mm that arvo/evening... a very timely xmas top-up (43mm for month).
