Wet start to Waitangi weekend for the north
Rain arriving Friday for northern regions.
GFS showing 850mb dewpoints 14-15C on the front over Northland Friday which should mean airmass destabilisation/thunderstorms.
Coromandal could get a lot of rain Saturday due to orographic/convection mix.
A system worth watching.

Re: Wet start to Waitangi weekend for the north
Latest severe weather outlook from Metservice
Issued: 2:56pm Thursday 4 Feb 2016
Valid from Saturday 6 February 2016 to Tuesday 9 February 2016
A low north of the country is expected to direct a moist east to northeast flow onto the North Island over the weekend, bringing rain to much of the North Island, before it moves away to the north.
There is high confidence of rainfall accumulations exceeding warning criteria for Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula, western Waikato and Bay of Plenty west of about Te Puke during Saturday. A WATCH is in force for these areas and it is likely that Coromandel Peninsula will be upgraded to a full warning early Friday. On Sunday, the risk of heavy rain reduces to low for these areas.
There is moderate confidence of warnable amounts of rain for the far north of Gisborne during Saturday and Sunday. Confidence of heavy rain reduces to low for western Waikato, Taupo and the remainder of Bay of Plenty during Saturday, while for Northland, the remainder of Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, the risk is for the entire weekend.
A high over the South Island should spread onto the North Island during Monday and Tuesday.

Just the usual boring weather down here.
Getting sick of it

This must be the most uninteresting El Nino weather scenarios here.
I think I might take up golf?

Both GFS and UKmet have dry weather for both games. Fingers crossed it stays that way.Razor wrote:Hows the cricket looking?....Wellington on Saturday and Hamilton on Monday
it will all come good in March for storms when the polar jet stream starts coming north again.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Just the usual boring weather down here.![]()

0.8 here. Apart from early Jan rain, we have been quite dry. I haven't seen a dryer area than around here (I see a fair chunk of country side). We needed some rain from this system.

Re: Wet start to Waitangi weekend for the north
Most of the heaviest falls since Friday look to have been around the Far North, Coromandel and BoP.
In the north, about 50-60mm has fallen in places like Kaikohe and Kerikeri and well over 100mm in the Coromandel. In the BoP, about 70mm fell in Te Puke, 50mm in Golden Valley, over 40mm in Tauranga and around 30mm in Whakatane and Rotorua. Central and north Auckland areas have received around 17mm, while less than 10mm fell in south Auckland.

Re: Wet start to Waitangi weekend for the north
Very little for the Waikato as Jamie said with 0.8, while in Matangi getting 0.6 and Hamilton AWS only getting 0.2mm.
Warm and slightly humid atm with 18-19°C DP's.

Re: Wet start to Waitangi weekend for the north
Taupo area very green and lush, good consistant falls from NE rain pushing and visiting family over weekend very suprised to see how dry taranaki is compared to us, NE systems creating a eastern summer effect on taranaki at the moment, and might I mention, sea and river swimming is literally like getting into a bath, very warm, river algae everywhere and my beloved trout seem to have taken refuge in close quarters under the mountain to escape the intense themocline of the region's fishery..interesting summer for the west for sure!

Yes, council rainfall data shows some areas around NW Taupo/Waitomo received around 20-40mm on Fri/Sat, while the rest of the Waikato region seems to have largely missed out. Also some decent falls around northern East Cape areas, including nearly 50mm at Ruatoria and 190mm at Mt Arowhana in the Raukumara Ranges.

I was at Kawerau BOP on Saturday and it was a drizzly day but heavier precip late afternoon/evening.
Lightning data for Saturday showed isolated lightning over western Waikato.
