Looks like BOP is getting a lot.

Re: General February Weather
that's big rain totals...Heavy Rain warnings did eventually come out..but only as it was occuring...
I did point out to Met Service on Facebook that the rain band that was feeding onto the far north had drifted slighly west and would keep the shower lines going...this was like early afternoon..and they said they expected it to move off to the east...that might have been model guidence..but where has good old fashioned carefull monitoring of what is actually happening -> forecasting, gone?

Thames was under the evening convergence line and showing 71.6mm for yesterday, much of that would have fallen after 5pm.

Re: General February Weather
GFS did have big rain totals due to the slow moving front, so Kudos to it

Here's a 24 hr rainfall graphic to 6am this morning. MS's Waiheke total is a bit conservative methinks.
On Twitter MetService wrote:Auckland: Yesterday's stalled front meant ~100mm of rain last 24hrs Whangaparaoa & Waharau, with Waiheke 70mm+ ^GG

Looks like the humidity is back at the end of the week. Winston's influence being pushed back a few more days. The westward track will bring in some good tropical moisture and maybe some good pm storms for central N Is ? Temps should be good too[High 20's with all the warm seas around] .

Some very moist air heading our way later in the week.
I was at Opoutere, Coromandel camping over the weekend, certainly noticed the cooler nights with the humid weather clearing out.

Its near Whangamata but not so well known, rich in bird life, lots of dotterels on the sand dunes and saw Kaka near the camp ground.Manukau heads obs wrote:That's a great spot...long way to get there though...get some great waves/swell there too from cyclone swell

General February Weather
A weak convergence line is still alive just to the west of me. It formed late afternoon and has hardly moved. We caught a few spit around 7pm. Hope it moves a bit further east!

Re: General February Weather
free app is always good
just trying that out..says cant connect...? (cannot refresh data, check your connection error)
(maybe overloaded?)
I see lots more coverage of smaller towns for forecasts..and up to 10 days out....
but that would be computer generated forecasts I presume..I wonder if they would be sanity checked by a human operator too though?

As far as I know the 10 day is computer forecasted still. Maybe Aaron can shed some light on it?

Re: General February Weather
Interesting, as I recall they used to be opposed to long range computer generated forecasts with no human input.

The Met Service haven't minded them. They seem to use it in their 6-10day forecasts at least.
I think the high cost of human input make the long range computer generated forecasts viable.

Re: General February Weather
Looking like a warmer air mass coming across the Tasman with higher temps next few days over NZ.

It's certainly a hot one today. 32.3°C.
Was thinking of going for a run, but decided to have a beer instead.

I see parts of Cantebury mid 20's before 8 am. Going to be steamy up north, still on track for high humidity and mid to high 20's.

We were on 24.9°C just before 6am when the wind changed to a southerly and the temp dropped to something more pleasant. Was a very tough night sleeping thats for sure.
