Very Cold: Tuesday 17th & Wed

Unread post by Willoughby »

The very deep and broad low in the southern oceans of NZ is set to bring up very cold Antarctic air.

Weather will be cloudy on the seaboard but sunny spells inland or for sheltered regions. Some showers for Napier northwards on the coast. (and of course Invercargill)

Likely highs for Tuesday...
Invercargill: 7c
Dunedin: 7c
Queenstown: 3c
Christchurch: 6c
Wellington: 9c

Wednesday...
Napier: 8c
Gisborne: 9c
Waiouru: 4c
Hamilton: 12c
Auckland: 13c
Cape Reinga: 15c

Umm... yikes!?

The cold unstable air will miss NZ however some cold air in High preasure will give some good frosts mostly over the South Island.

Yes some reasonable cold air next week but what levels could snow lower too I guess it depends how cold the air gets and where the low tracks.
The models I've seen don't suggest particularly low thickness levels over NZ, but definitely a cold southeasterly flow over northern and central NZ. If the cold air undercuts moisture from the low to the north, things could get interesting in the central NI. But big frosts in inland SI look much more likely.

BTW eastern NSW could get a hammering from SE gales, heavy seas, and maybe heavy rain, according to GFS and GASP outlooks for next week. The low expected to affect northern NZ could move west accross the Tasman.

Certainly for western areas, though the damp onshore flow should keep daytime maximums below normal in the east of both islands. Inland South Island looks like contuinuing chilly, with heavy frosts and maybe even some snow for you Gary should the northern moisture move further south and inland on Wednesday.

Coolish right now and saw fresh snow on the peaks in the Lindis Pass when I came through from Lower Parnell and Ponsonby South this afternoon.
