Re: Gales and Storms - 23rd -25th March
Some elevated thunderstorms overnight offshore down the west of the North Island.
Another crop of elevated convection has developed out to east of Northland and this will bring heavy possibly thundery rainfall to Bay of Plenty today.
Looks like the wind was the main issue for Auckland with this system with very little rain.
6am temperature in Auckland is 22C with dp21C.

Looks like eastern BOP in the firing line. The front as we see so often weakening as it approaches the Nth Is then intensifying off Nthland as it passes. The blocking high may keep things nasty for a while out east.

I see Auckland Airport gusting to 41 kts currently in the NEer
thats not bad for an "inland" site
Bean Rock has gusts up to nearly 60 kts
so a decent NE Gale alright, as forecasted
but the rain has missed us in Auckland

Air is very unstable over much of the country today!! Nice to hear of storms up in the north island! Will be watching down here later on today. As the SW change pushes through what looks to be about 3-4pm 500mb temp not cold though! So hopefully enough omphh with heating/ humidity to make up for it.

It sounds like the Waiho River has finally done what it threatened to for years in Franz Josef

Re: Gales and Storms - 23rd -25th March
The SE change in the Waikato Friday may produce a late afternoon storm. But the upper air is warm and the ability for much CAPE to develop looks limited.
I think we need some colder upper air for storm set ups now. Hopefully April can bring in some nice 500mb troughs.

Wow GFS sure overestimated the rain for this event. Was showing 40-60mm+ for days beforehand, only around 10mm has fallen across the Auckland area...

Front through here now so improving weather. On track for a dry March.
A few heavy showers for Waikato tomorrow afternoon with the humid air hanging on.

I think the Auckland/Waikato area might get more rain yet...
we still have a very high dew point in the air mass behind the front
and have just had a burst of rain that moved SE from Piha...
i.e we could get a new frontal zone blow up today ...

May catch the back edge of the last system as it moves down towards the BOP .The blocking high will try and hold the frontal activity back. Storms tomorrow [pm] Had very little sun this month [march el nino weather ????] There will be moss on the inside of the house soon.100 mm now from this event.

We have some thunder in chc. It didn't look likely but a wee cell boiled up over town on the change.

I was in Fendalton Library about 4.30pm when some briefly torrential downpours hit. Could hear a few rumbles of thunder.

Re: Gales and Storms - 23rd -25th March
Plenty of thunder from the storm just north of New Brighton. It developed over my place but as it moves slowly north it's intensity is growing
I'm no expert but I love severe weather!

Lightning active storm to my SW and radar showing a nice convergence. Only woke because of the bloody drags and burnouts outside my house. Hopefully that convergence moves this way.

This convergence is running up the west coast so I think a good chance it will move over us at some point.

GFS showing the afternoon convergence from Waitomo into southern/eastern Waikato. A few heavy showers/thunderstorms on the cards. Hamilton looks in the firing line.
