The arguments around storm chasers blocking traffic are a storm in a tea cup!

Looking like a big event (mod risk) in the pipeline for tornado alley in about a week. If the gfs is correct.

Take a look at this set up 5 days out for tornado alley. Looks text book tornado! A warm front across kansas and dry line through Oklahoma. Triple point near the low centre. Big CAPE numbers.

Looking active over there in the coming week and into early May if GFS is to be believed.

The cost of international air travel at short notice has dropped considerably over recent years to make storm chasing to the US at short notice a viable option now. Chasing the set up rather than locking into a time frame. I am usually very flexible with my work so it could work for me . Something to consider for next year.
I'm heading over on the 19th May with NZstorm

We will pass each other going over the pacific as I return from my short trip. Air NZ has had a monopoly for too long on the Auckland to USA routes since QANTAS ceased them some time ago. Seeing American Airlines start theirs in June is potentially great news for us. Ironically using the Save70.com site and booking United flights (actually Air NZ between Auckland and San Francisco on the way over and LAX and Auckland on the way back) I made considerable savings. It made the short trip much more affordable. Hopefully next year I'll be clear of obligations during the peak of the US Storm Season and can do a reasonable chase, I'm going to try from mid/late May through to Early/mid June next year.

You can fly Quantas but you go through Sydney. Fiji Air were selling Ak- LA return for around a $1000 last week.

From what I know about US domestic airlines, they are cheap if you book months in advance, but its pricey to book at short notice.

Spwill and I are avoiding USA domestic by flying into Dallas direct on Qantas.

Driving. Texas Panhandle is only 4 hrs drive from Dallas. But of coarse if the set ups are at the other end of Tornado Alley we lose a day with the commute. (you would too with OKC)

Yea I suppose Dallas is probably 4 hours north of Houston. So qantas is is the way to go since they do Dallas and air NZ Houston.

We fly into Denver although it does mean we do have the domestic transfer but I like positioning myself somewhere in the centrer and typically as the season continue the storms start to dift north. We get in @ 2pm on the 18th so hope to get a 4hr drive in the general direction for the next day.

Nam/GFS now have the warm front/triple point into Nebraska and dry line through Kansas/Oklahoma Tuesday.(Wednesday NZ)

NAM sounding for 00Z southern Nebraska. Cape 4200 j/kg.

Best bet for you would be the US$1153 deal I just found via Save70.com from AKL to OKC from May 18-30 on Orbitz.com website. Have a play, some good deals to be found.

Yes, but flying through Sydney adds something like 6 or 7 hours to the trip. Combine that with the very early departure time in Auckland and for me they don't appeal for several reasons, would rather pay a little more and not go that way.

Yes, I saw some fine pricing flying Air Polynesia or some such during my searches, they had about 1 hr 20 layovers in Tahiti if I recall correctly and flew an A340.

I wouldn't mind it if I lived in the same city as the early morning departure. But living 2.5 hours away it adds an extra slog to the longer journey and/or additional cost.

Yeah I leave 6am or something silly on the 18th and get into Denver 2pm on the same day. Havent yet worked out how long a day it is but must be close to 24hours

Last year we flew Sydney into Dallas and I felt more rested on arrival by not having to change at LAX with all that disruption.

Trouble is, with the early departure time I can't fly up the same day. Options are driving & storing the car with the associated really early start (aka no point in trying to get any sleep), or flying up the day before & staying overnight. As I no longer have a sister near the airport, it's expensive.
