I have just realised my average wind speed of 80km/h recorded last night is my station record. Not bad few days when you set new station record wind gust one night then a couple nights later max average wind speed.

the fact the baromter is a bit lower than modelled means the winds to come could be a bit worse than forecasted

Yes, I have 990 in Glenfield. 13.6 degrees, just a half-hearted breeze, very dreary-looking indeed. Must go stash the wheelie bin in the carport somewhere where it's not likely to blow into the car.Manukau heads obs wrote:barometer down to 989 here now

Here's a follow-up report showing the apparent tornado damage in Kihikihi, just south of Te Awamutu last night. Wonder if it might have been a microburst?Manukau heads obs wrote:re kihikiiki ,I see someone posted on FB on waikato civil defense they could see a funnely cloud in that area

Looks like the low is right on track to cross the Auckland area. Barometer down to 988 here now.

Wind started to pick up here around 1.30am, rain at about 1.50am. And with that, I'm off to bed.

Re: More thunderstorms and possible tornadoes 20-21 May
nice video
the swell on the west coast here was not as big as forecasted
only 5m, maybe 6m a times
not the 7m forecasted
it might have been bigger swell further north maybe?

Chanced upon today some apparent further tornado damage in Puahue district, about 10km East of Kihikihi. Corner Parklands and Mockton road. In the second shot there are some uprooted pine trees in the far distance.

So you observed rotational damage? It wasn't straight line wind damage.cbm wrote:Chanced upon today some apparent further tornado damage

a narrow path of destruction like that means a tornado
and Face book posters said they could see the funnel cloud (there was a good moon light)

Re: More thunderstorms and possible tornadoes 20-21 May
I didn't go so far as to try to analyse if things had fallen in differing directions, but it seemed the damage path was very narrow but severe. It wasn't like there were little twigs down all over the district.
Here is a zoom in of the background in a line behind the sign and two close broken trees. Just one or two pine trees uprooted in that grove.

Re: More thunderstorms and possible tornadoes 20-21 May
all points to a tornado
not sure why members of this forum want to always say, nah, it will be straight line winds
(which do not produce a narrow destruction path that goes for a long distance)

Looks tornado like to me.
We have a storm coming my way. Saw an awesome cg then about 1 min later a large rumble. Also have mama on the leading edge of this.
