That Tasman Sea low next weekend could produce snow to low levels in the Canterbury foothills?

Looks like snow down to around 1000m next weekend for Canterbury so great for the ski fields if it comes off! Looks around 30-40cm of snow for Mt Hutt!

Early doors, but if that pans out if could be a warm advection set up? But of course its too early to be doing much more than educated speculation

If only it does eventuate, though it is looking more and more likely now. Planted trees in the weekend into soil that was bone dry, its so needed.

They were talking bout heavy snow for Canterbury at work today, from Friday and I told them I didn't know what they were talking about. Could be snowy in the mountains but not down to sea level as they were indicating???

That's an old "stuff" article that is doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment from 2013.... People think it's for this weekend but haven't noticed the date, or looked at the forecast..... They have all been sucked in

Coldest day of winter so far for us down here (well, there hasn't been any snow yet). Clear skies with a light frost this morning which then clouded over at sunrise (which is quite late!) to leave us with an utterly miserable day. Reached 7.6°C with a couple of mm of rain in the arvo/evening to top it all off. Shortest day tomorrow so it's all on the improve from here right?!?!

Hopefully a sunny spring due La Nina.

Looking like both Wednesday and Thursday will offer us a thunder chance . With the low level shear tomorrow possibly an isolated tornado report.

I'm flying back from invercargil tomorrow evening. Could be a bumpy ride then?

It's a bit of a shock to see how late the sun rises and how early it sets down here. Mind you I've been here since Sunday night and I still haven't seen the sun due to cloud.

Not a typo...
From the Oxford Dictionary

Definition of early doors in English:
Early doors -

British informal Early on, especially in a game or contest:
‘you should try to wind up their star player early doors’

Apparently originally with reference to admission to a music hall some time before the start of the performance

looks like Auckland has broken the temperature for the warmest shortest day recorded?
(might depend on what station you use?)

Winter solstice in NZ usually either falls on June 21st or 22nd.
Akld Aero's highest ever winter solstice temp is 20.0C recorded on June 22nd in 1998.

Edit: Having said that, both Mangere and Akld Aero's highest ever T-max for June 21st is 17.8C (based on available daily data from 1959 and 1966 respectively).

Looks likely to have been quite a few overnight temp records broken in the upper North Island last night for the time of year (and possibly even for the whole month of June?).
