SW Gales (non Michael)

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Just looking at the latest ECMWF, we should get very strong SW gales in eastern areas, these magifying themselves over to the Auckland area as the recent intense anticyclone in the sth Tasman sea tends to dip south prior to it's slow weakoning as it drifts NE? :)
This id due to the persistence of the trough we have over us at the moment :D

I hope that your house is well stuck to the ground.
With a bit of luck the Sw gale should rise to about 65kPh in your area.

Hamilton

Friday
Max: 14°C Min: 2°C
(Day) (Night)
Showers laced with hail. Southwesterly gales.
I thought the MetService staff were all highly compentent and trained with a reasonable knowledge of micro-climates in New Zealand.
Surely they know now that Hamilton doesn't get gales, but just gusts up to gale-force rarely. Or are they just Michaels today, over-compensating? ;)

Winds tomorrow should gust to 80km/h (strong gale)
But the average wind speed will be around a beaufort of 5 (fresh), 30-39km/h. 6 in showers.

Average for Auckland tomorrow of 6 to 7 (strong to near-gale) and gust to strong gale 76km/h+.

Gusting 90km/h+ in Dunedin tomorrow morning also with an average of 6-7. Picking up tonight.
