There has already been tornadoes from Mississippi to Georgia.low-level hodographs enlarge, supercells capable of producing tornadoes (some strong) appear increasingly
likely.

USA 2017 storm season
I see SPC have a moderate risk for the south today.

Was watching a rotating wall cloud on a Facebook live stream earlier, regretting my decision not to chase later this year already...

Re: USA 2017 storm season
SPC are going for a rare 'high risk' today for eastern Dixie Alley. The last high risk anywhere in the US was June 2014.
There were 15 fatalities yesterday from tornadoes.
There were 15 fatalities yesterday from tornadoes.
Forecast soundings in the HIGH risk area are characterized by
effective helicity values of 500-700 m2/s2 overlapping MLCAPE of
1000-1500 J/kg. This rare parameter space will support the risk of
long-track strong tornadoes across the HIGH risk area.

Re: USA 2017 storm season
A high risk bust today.
Too many thunderstorms developed which means surface cold pooling and an environment unsuitable for tornadoes. This does sometimes happen in the big set ups. We experienced this on our chase trip last year, a moderate risk day bust May 26th.

Re: USA 2017 storm season
I am not sure I would call it a 'bust'. Significant tornadoes were recorded on both Saturday + Sunday. If the fatality figures are confirmed, the total will be higher than the entire year of 2016.

I think the 'high risk bust' was in reference to Monday's outlook for the US…

Re: USA 2017 storm season
The US are a day behind so it was the 22nd that the high risk was issued by SPC. The SPC have 5 categories for severe thunderstorm and Sundays event looked like a 3(enhanced) for tornadoes, rather than a 5(high).
2015 and 2016 were largely quiet for tornadoes. Perhaps 2017 will be a big year, it certainly has got off to a very active start.

Temps upto 34C in north Texas today with Dallas Airport recording 31C, a February record.
Looking like February 2017 could be the warmest Feb on record as well.

Re: USA 2017 storm season
Looks like plenty of thunderstorms across southern USA for the remainder of the month. Damaging wind will be the primary severe threat.

Re: USA 2017 storm season
I will be over there for the last 10 days May. But I am flying into Houston which could be awkward if the chasing is in the northern plains! The direct Air NZ flight from Auckland and $1,250 airfare lured me into taking that option. Late May tends to be boom or bust for chasing, it was definitely a boom last year.03Stormchaser wrote:Who is going this year?

Re: USA 2017 storm season
There was a crash between two storm chase vehicles in Texas today killing all three occupants. One of the those killed was Kelly Williamson who was well known for his streaming of tornadoes and he was a contractor for the Weather Channel. From what I have read Williamson ran a stop sign.

Re: USA 2017 storm season
The tragic accident in Texas is a safety reminder to all storm chasers. I have always thought having laptops set up in the front of the car next to the driver was a recipe for distraction. But most chasers seem to do it. The driver needs to be able to concentrate on driving.
A classic early season pattern over there now with regular short waves progged to sweep the southern plains and dixie alley. Looking like an active April in the pipeline.

.
Drivers should at least stop at every stop sign. I think the speeding is something that will always happen.
The risks are greater for us because we are driving on the opposite side of the road to what is normal for us and out of our normal time zone

Re: USA 2017 storm season
considering the number of chasers, the rate of accidents is probably no worse than for the normal population/local drivers, I bet

Re: USA 2017 storm season
SPC have a high risk over east Texas/Louisiana today with strong tornadoes expected.
Looking like a mass of storms over there already though. Tornadic supercells like their own space.
Forecast sounding from within the high risk area 00Z.

There was a PDS issued on Louisiana at about 6.45am NZ time & by 7am a large tornado headed towards Alexandria LA, last I heard 2 confirmed fatalities from an overturned trailer. Been at work since.
