Already been some tornado warnings this morning associated with the approaching hurricane. Yes, hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico do spawn supercells with tornadoes.

After crossing coastal San Jose Island, Cat 4 Hurricane Harvey's eye-centre is currently making mainland landfall between Port Aransas and Port O'Conner. A station at Aransas Pass recently reported 1-minute mean-winds of 165 km/h and a gust of 193 km/h.

He's referring to the damage to the hotel they were staying in, it's 3rd & 4th floor collapsed. Their vehicle lost it's rear windscreen. They were in Rockport TX (Fairfield Inn & Suites).

Insane numbers showing up from this. 1250mm in Houston so far. Rainfall rates of 2"/hr and they many areas had 400-600mm in 24hrs.

The terms the national weather service is using are crazy, basically saying its off the charts and they don't know how the rivers etc will respond to this amount of rainfall.

Are you sure that 1250mm (49.2") isn't what some areas are expected to total by this Friday US time?

Here's the latest NOAA Selected Storm Total Rainfalls during the last 3 days to 9pm Sunday US CDT (2pm Monday NZST).

Dayton, NE of Houston, and Santa Fe, SE of Houston, currently top the list with just a few mm shy of 700mm, nearly all of which fell within 48 hrs. Unprecedented rainfalls!

I was checking out some PWS readings around Houston earlier today and saw one station that showed 70mm rain in 30 minutes. Really intense!

I see one of NOAA's Dayton sites now totals 1.009 metres (39.72") of rain about 5 hours ago.

This Baytown PWS, east of Houston, shows over 800mm just on Sunday LT alone.
And this Dayton PWS also shows about 760mm just on Sunday LT.

This PWS shows around 130mm in an hour on August 26th . The Baytown one you linked to shows 74mm in 20 minutes on the 26th Nev!

And the Dayton one shows 315mm in 3 hours! Really incredible rain totals

Highest hourly total I have seen so far is ~180mm at this PWS, in the hour starting 11.20pm 26th August

Wow! NOAA's 'Cedar Bayou' WS east of Houston has now recorded 1,318mm (51.88").

The previous record from any tropical cyclone in the continental US from records dating to 1950, was 1,219mm (48.00"), also set in Texas, during Tropical Storm Amelia in 1978. It's also just a few mm shy of the 1,321mm (52.00") Tropical Storm Hiki dropped on Hawaii in 1950.

Houston was unlucky as the movement of Harvey was blocked by high pressure.

Another interesting as aspect of this event was the tropical tornadoes in Houston, but they are generally EF0 to EF1 only.
