Just a bit of light rain so far. Shower band on 9PM radar may have fractured or weakened, but it might not be a quickie like this morning. MetService has predicted a moderate risk of thunder for the whole east coast of the South Island tonight. The southerly has just gone through.

Good. Now I can go off to bed ..Yawn

Plenty of thunder and lightning here last night between about 10.40pm and 11.30, flashes about two per minute, mostly out to the east over the sea, but a few closer to being overhead. A brief period of very heavy hail at one point, but only lasted 20 seconds or so before the smaller hail and rain came in, blown in by a pretty strong SW. I was surprised the thunder and lightning went on for so long after the rain and wind arrived, I'm guessing there was more than one storm in the system.

Very lovly nice sunny and warm here today after last night's thunderstorm and all hands together go to Aaron for pointing this out before Met Service even put a risk up
.
Reports of Pine trees being struck at Waikuku beach may have to investigate some time soon
but otherwise I don't think my lighting came out very good on camera last night I think due to the fact by the time i was filming it the strikes were too much inside the cloud for the camera to recognise but otherwise it's best of luck for this storm season coming up.
Cheers
JASON

I think your right Spwill, snow didn't fall to lowish levels (maybe above 500/600m in Cantab?). Apparently it gave some ok snow though at Mt Hutt where 8cm was reported to of fallen, so it was hevier than the last SW change but nothing huge to marvel at either.
Thanks John! Glad the storms last night pulled off. I looked at SST and could see that even if we did get to around 5 or 6 degrees before the change came through on land something was still possible because of the warmer sea temps, and the fact that Chch and Bank's Peninsula sticks out from the coast helped to.
They didn't seem to start though until they were over or just north of the peninsula on the east coast so perhaps that suggests it helped trigger the activity within the arimass Cb's?
Looking foward to this summer to Jason!
Cheers

None on the Port Hills this morning that I could see. Temp got down to 5C during the storm last night, but the squall was fairly brief. Desert Road was closed this morning and TV1 Weather reported that snow had been down to 900m on the Orongorongos near Wellington (obviously only dusting the tops), but I haven't heard any other reports. I noticed that Mahia was only 6C at Noon, with recent precipitation, so east coast ranges could've got a dusting as well. What level did the snow fall to ,didn't look that cold last night. I recall Invercargill was on 8C at 9pm.

High on the hills here this morning, just a light dusting. Missed any thunder or lightning here, only had the winds.tich wrote:None on the Port Hills this morning that I could see. As I always mention the snow on particular hills, here's a guide of the Otago area...

Why the hell isn't Omarama on that map, huh? We're classified as North Otago, darn it!

What's the township? 430m?
